My wife's ear got plugged when she went swimming yesterday. Now it really hurts and the pain seems to be going almost down her throat. What can we do?
See doctor ASAP: Your wife may have contracted an infection in her ear canal and topical antibiotics can be used. Possibly she has an infection behind her eardrum and needs oral antibiotics. I currently have pharyngitis, went to the dr 3 days ago. My throat and congestion is getting better but my ears seem to get more and more plugged. Why?
Connected: Ear nose and throat are all connected. Sometime inflamation of the throat will cause blockage of the eustachian tube which will give you these symptoms of ears popping and getting plugged. Steam inhalation and a humidifier at home will help with these symptoms. If your ear hurt or if you have a fever, get back to your doctor. ...Read more
Very difficult: It is hard to answer the question because it is non-specific. Popping of the ear may be a physiological phenomenon. For example, swallowing alone can almost always be felt as a popping sensation in the ear. The swallow causes the muscle that opens the eustachian tube (auditory tube) to open and gases from the back of the nose equalize pressure in the middle ear. See ENT for specific diagnosis. ...Read more

Tonsils post-infx: It sounds like the infection cleared up ok (azithromycin is not my favorite drug for strep, it works ok), but you have more concern about chronic changes present in your tonsils and that is what is likely affecting your ear as well. If this is a one time thing, i'd give it another 4-8 weeks as long as you're feeling ok. If you have had chronic problems with recurrent tonsil/throat, time to see ent. ...Read more
