Degenerative arthritis usually hurts more with acitvitity. Both types usually originate low, but inflammatory arthritis of the spine will usually cause sacroiliac joint inflammation and pain. This pain is usually felt in the "buttocks" or the top pelvis.

Chondromalacia: Early arthritis could cause pain with kneeling, especially if the cartilage on the undersurface of the kneecap (patella) is damaged. This is called chondromalacia.
