Early Signs Of Autism In A 18 Month Old
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting three areas: abnormal socialization, communication, and restricted interests with repetitive patterns of behavior. It is usually detected in the first two years of life. Cause is unknown but strong evidence points to an interplay between genetic and environmental factors. Patients with autism may display significant delays in certain developmental areas while having normal or superior strengths in other developmental or learning domains. The severity of the disorder is highly variable ...Read more
ASDs: Asds begin before age 3. some show sxs within the first few months. Others not until 18 to 24 months of age. In infancy: Core symptoms of autism look different at different ages, but always include delays in social communication. A 4-month-should goo and coo " in sync" with mom, a 6-month-old should raise his arms to be picked up, a 9-month old should respond to his name. The diagnosis includes much more, but these are things parents can notice early. Firstsigns.Org has good checklists for parents. Check it out! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
How early is autism detected also what is the very early signs of it? Can you please let me know in depth and what procedures are done to detect it?
Studies of siblings: of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder have led to diagnosis & treatment by 12 mos. A baby who does NOT raise arms to be picked up at 6-9 mos., consistently turn to name at 9 mos., wave "bye" responsively & play Pat-a-Cake & Peek-a-boo at 9-10 mos., or point with index finger for desired objects at 12 mos. needs a multidisciplinary evaluation by your state's Early Intervention Program. ...Read more
My 6 month old had said "mama" a few times then stopped. Is this a sign of autism? I read any loss of language at any age is a sign.
Good question, good: Answers! a 6-mo.Old baby communicates non-verbally;e.g., lifting his/her arms to be picked up. For receptive language, begins to inhibit a behavior;e.g., when you say "no" in a low, firm voice while removing him/her from something you don't want touched. Stranger anxiety, also. The aap's healhy child app can be personalized or go to www.Aap.Org & firstsigns.Org has developmental screens. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
My 4.5 month old has started to move his head side to side like saying "no" very often. Someone told me is a sign of autism. Is this true?
Not really: Is your child doing this as a reaction to your face? Is your child doing this when you are not looking at him? This sounds like an interaction between you and your child so I do not think this is concerning. Is your child doing any other concerning behaviors? Is he fussy and irritable a lot? No eye contact or does not seem to be interested in people including you the parents? ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
If a child is showing signs of autism at an early age, 17 months, does that mean they are more likely to be on the more severe end of the spectrum?
Not necessarily: I find 17 months towards the later end of showing some suggestive findings. Autism is not all one entity although we tend to lump them together under one name. Most will develop many skill sets that might seem unlikely when first diagnosed. Cautious optimism should be maintained as you work with those that will provide needed therapy and direction down this unpredictable road. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
20 month old has verba, social, and communication delays. Could this be signs of autism and how to differentiate ASD from aa development delay ?
Social interaction : A few things. One it's important to have a hearing test to rule out hearing impairment. A hallmark of ASD is abnormal social functioning such as preferring not to be held or cuddled. Limited eye contact or interest in conversation. ASD often also presents with delays. Delays alone, however, are less likely to have social dysfunction and are usually more specific. I hope this helps. ...Read more
