Some docs say hCG levels have wide variations, but some say that the rise is very consistent in early pregnancy and that it always doubles. Explain...
Both are right: The absolute number an pregnant individual has as a result at one point in time has a broad range. You cannot predict the number of weeks of pregnancy solely based on the absolute number. However if you take one persons value and follow it over time, it should double every two days. ...Read more

Ok: Most ivf clinics only measure HCG levels approximately 9 days after a day 5 embryo transfer. However, some clinics feel that the combination of HCG levels and Progesterone levels have a more predictive value of a good pregnancy than HCG levels alone. Personally, we only measure hcg. Hope this helps and good luck. ...Read more
I have flucuating hCG levels since I tested postive on 14dpo, hCG ars 35, 24, 48 and now 317 at 5 wks. Will my pregnancy be normal or ectopic?
Hcg levels: Rising hcg's are reassuring. However, I usually want to see a Progesterone level in patients at risk of ectopic, especially if plateau of HCG is noted. Most (but not all) ectopics have very low Progesterone levels. Often times even lower than an early miscarriage. See if your OB is comfortable with ordering and interpreting Progesterone levels. ...Read more

I am pregnant. I went to doctor and they looked through ultra sound couldn't see anything. Said early pregnancy hCG level is 28. Is baby ok?
You tell us: Only you know when you could have gotten pregnant. The answer to this question is only going to be known with dates and more data. What did your physician tell you? Why did you not share that VITAL piece of information in your question? If you are more than six weeks then no baby on ultrasound means the pregnancy is not viable. ...Read more
My cycle is irregular. Would HCG levels usually be high enough to show up on an hpt by the time a pregnancy is far enough along to cause spotting?
After missed period: You should do the test 4-5 days after missed period. If your cycles are irregular then do the test about three weeks after what you think was day of fruitful sex. If the result is negative, repeat the test 4-5 days later. Use first morning urine and follow the instructions for the test carefully. ...Read more
Is hcg level 46 considered low in early pregnancy? Knowing that my period is irregular (30-39) and last period was on 17 april. Which week of pregnancy
Do a follow up hCG: A level of 46 indicates very early pregnancy, most likely your OB will advise some serial levels every 48 hours or so for perhaps the next 2 or 3, and this should hopefully help determine how the pregnancy is doing. If the level rise looks appropriate, your OB will then determine when it may be optimum to do a pelvic ultrasound to determine the well being of the pregnancy. Best Wishes ...Read more

HCG isn't the only: Cause of nausea during pregnancy. High estrogen levels and other unknown factors may contribute to it. You don't mention if you've started having periods again. If all your hormones are back to pre-pregnancy levels and your periods have returned to normal, perhaps its time to look for another cause. I wish you the best. Dr. Anne ...Read more
