102: The ear, or tympanic, thermometer is pretty accurate, so the 102 is likely 102. If it goes higher in a one-year old I would suggest calling your pediatrician to see if an ER visit is appropriate. Push fluids to keep baby hydrated, like water or Pedialyte; consider Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Motrin according to package instructions to bring fever down. Not to woory: The basal body temperature varies with time of day and type of thermometer 97.6-98.6 is AVERAGE and completely NORMAL!

I have noticed that my ear thermometer by braun always seems to read a degree or so higher than my digital. Is this generally the case?

Check the setting: Some of these thermometers allow you t set the readout as oral vs rectal and program in an extra degree for the rectal setting. It may require reading through the instructions that came with the product to reset it. ...Read more

Not a true fever: When we have a fever, our whole body is hot. It's just easier to measure our temperature on our foreheads, mouths, or armpits.
