I've been on antibiotics for 8 days for an ear infection. I still have fluid in my ear and the pain is returning. Should I return to pcp?

Yes: Occasionally fluid behind the eardrum will actually need to be drained. Also, if the fluid is coming from the sinuses and not the ear itself treatment may need to be adjusted. Either way, if your symptoms are returning or worsening, definitely get back in and let them have another look. ...Read more

I went to the doctor and told me I have fluids in both of my ears. And I'm still feeling off balance. She prescribe antibiotic but still I feel dizz.

Lose the fluid: You need to encourage drainage of the fluid, which if otherwise healthy, can be done with Pseudoephedrine orally or afrin (/generic) nasal spray for a day or two until the antibiotic gets a foothold. That should help your balance/dizziness. Good luck. ...Read more

Warming feeling in left ear &feeling of fullness. I went to my dr., said fluid in ear. Gave antibiotics and decongestants. Can this be a tumor?

Warming feeling in left ear &feeling of fullness. I went to my dr., said fluid in ear. Gave antibiotics and decongestants. Can this be a tumor?

Highly unlikely: The middle ear is connected to the back of the nose via the Eustacean tube, and if there is nasal congestion, the tube doesn't function and fluid seeps into the middle ear, which your doc confirmed. If it doesn't clear in months, then consider enlarged adenoids or other sinus condition. Usually this clears promptly if related to a URI, but allergies, etc may be the cause of chronic rhinitis ...Read more

Severe inner & outer ear infection. I'm on oral antibiotic & drops. The pain is gone but my ear is so full of fluid. Any tips to get it to drain?

Takes time: The fluid is trapped in the middle ear space and must exit through the Eustachian tube. This can take up to 3 weeks or so in a routine middle ear infection. Nothing you take or do is likely to speed this up. Antihistamines may actually slow the process. ...Read more

I finished 2 rounds of antibiotics for sinus infection. Dr checked ears. No infect. Just fluid. Used nasonex (mometasone). Ear hurting and feels full. What is next?

Additional Measures: If you symptoms that have failed to improved despite two rounds of antibiotics it might be worthwhile getting a sinus CT scan to evaluate anatomy and extend of sinus disease. Some chronic sinus infections required 3 weeks or more of antibiotics. To help with ear symptoms start combination of Nasonex (mometasone) 1 spray each nostril twice a day and OTC Afrin 1 spray each nostril twice a day. ...Read more

Getting over ear infection. Fluid gone. Feels like inflated balloon still in ear canal...Finished zpak antibiotic?

Be patient: The medication stays in your system for about 2 wks even though you finish it in 6 days. It can also take several more weeks for the residual fluid to be replaced by air. There may be a transient period where the eustachian tube does not function properly and leaves a vacuum like pressure in the middle ear. By 3-4 weeks from the start of treatment most will resolve. ...Read more

Had throat infection and ear infection took antibiotics for 10 days. My glands in throat are very swollen and sore still?

Had throat infection and ear infection took antibiotics for 10 days. My glands in throat are very swollen and sore still?

Other cause: It could be your throat symptoms were caused by a bacteria that was not sensitive to the antibiotic you took, that the infection was realy caused by a virus, and that your throat irritation is not infectious at all and due to something like allergies. If your glands were really swollen and really sore throat, at your age I would consider mono and I would ask your doc about that possibility. ...Read more

Is it normal that I have had an ear infection for 7 days & been on antibiotics for 5 days but still have dizziness & some pain?

Ear infection?: Sometimes doctors may not accurately diagnose "ear infections." if you have only pain and no difficulty hearing an no discharge or drainage you may have a pain problem and not an infection problem. In the case of a pain problem it might not be your ear but your jaw joint. Too often doctors treat pain with antibiotics and the ear is actually ok. That is why patients think the antibiotics don't work. ...Read more

I have an ear infection and am on antibiotic and have been for 4 days. My ear seems to be worse, and now seeping pinkish fluid. Is this normal?

Not easy to answer: Often people say they have an ear infection, but it could be middle ear infection or an outer ear infection (one is treated with antibiotic pills the other with antibiotic drops) if one has significant drainage and still hears perfectly well, it most likely is outer and needs drops. But if your hearing has been muffled --more likely middle ear infection. Either way - get in to see an ent. ...Read more

Ear infection still hurts off and on and cant hear. Been on ear drops and oral antibiotics for 6 days now.

Give it time: It is best to complete the course of antibiotics. Middle ear infections often cause accumulation of liquids in the middle ear which may cause some discomfort and hearing loss. Typically complete resolution of symptoms is expected by the third week of therapy. If symptoms worsen while on therapy or you have fever a repeat examination will be needed. Take care. ...Read more

Sinusitis.: By the symptoms you have described, acute bacterial sinusitis does seem to be a reasonable diagnosis. Which antibiotic are you taking? You can still: Have pain 1 week post-op & this be entirely within normal limits. If the pain is easily relieved with an NSAID then there is little chance that you have developed fibrinolytic alveolitis - otherwise commonly know as "dry socket". The pain that you describe "and my ear", however, can be a sign of dry socket - pain radiating into ear & temple region. It would be best to call the surgeon to check. ...Read more
