woke up in tears bc her ear hurt so bad.gave her Motrin,had her lay on a heating pad propped up and nothing helped.Ear drops hurt her. Ear infection?

The upper part (near my cartilage) of my ear is swollen, tender to touch and warm. I have had previous ear infections. But this is definitely not an ear infection. I have tried putting a heating pad and an ice pack on it.
Ear infection: Is it the ear canal or the middle ear that is involved? For outer ear/otitis externa/ swimmer's ear there are otc treatments available. Dizziness, however, suggests otitis media & possible labyrinthitis (infection/ inflammation in the balance mechanism). You mean like : Before antibiotics people had ear infections ; just dealt with them .Over time, some would perforate or a doc could lance the drum (painful) .Over time some self healed ; some went on to develop abscesses that required surgery.Some had the ear bones freeze up ; lost some hearing. A few days of simple pain killers or heat from a heating pad may provide relief, but long term outcome could be a pbm. ...Read more
