Nerve pain: You could have an irritated or inflamed nerve in the face / jaw area that causes pain just under the earlobe. Another possibility is TMJ which is inflammation in the jaw joint - it can cause pain in the ear as well. What medication: If your immune system is working well, your lymph nodes will often get enlarged and can be painful as it filters out the badness. You did not state if they determined what specific infection it was (if they determined the cause) and if you are on antibiotics.
