1) you have an ear infection and the ear swelling involves the adjacent TMJ apparatus. This should resolve as the infection resolves with antibiotics.
2) you have a TMJ problem, with secondary ear pain. Your MD looks in the ear, doesn't see anything. Rather than admitting he doesn't see anything, proclaims "ear infection" and prescribes antibiotics.

Not sure: I'm not sure an ear infection could cause those symptoms. However, tmd (temporomandibular joint dysfunction) could cause symptoms of an ear ache or ear infection. The TMJ (temporomandibular joint) is in close approximation to the ear. If there is inflammation going on around the joint it could be putting pressure on the ear. Unlikely: Middle ear infections are more or less limited to the middle ear space. The germs therein feed of the mucus which increases during infections. Was it cotton swab?: If you used a cotton swab to "clean" your ear, there is a significant risk that you scratched (caused abrasion of) your outer ear canal--which could have led to an outer ear infection. The other possibility is that you may have packed the earwax down into the canal so as to wedge it causing undue pressure on that part of the ear--triggering jaw pain.
