Ear drops: Hello. It depends on which ear drops were prescribed and why. If a suspected infection is present, then a culture may be obtained and a prescription ear drop is ordered. ...Read more

Lately I've been sick with a light sniffles. I blew my nose and hour ago and popped my ear. I still can't hear well. Is it safe to use ear drops?
Allergies.: That sounds like allergies. Nasal congestion, runny nose, cough, headache, facial pains and earache can be triggered by fragrances, dust mites, grass, trees, pets, environmental molds and such. There are outdoor and indoor allergens. OTC nasal steroid and nasal saline are worth a try. Ear drops won't get to the root of the issue. ...Read more

I had water in my ear so I used ear drops for swimmers ear. Now I can't hear and the drops are stuck in my ear.
Get ear checked.: If your over the counter remedy hasn't fixed the problem, and you have lost your hearing then you definitely need to have a doctor peer inside your ear to make sure that you haven't developed a hole in your ear drum, or gotten a middle ear infection. Your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic ear drop if necessary. ...Read more

Do I have a perforated ear drum? I have had chronic earaches since I was a kid. Lately I have noticed that I cannot hear well out of my left ear, and I do hear the ocean sound. I put some ear drops in (left over from my last doctor visit), but it hasn't
High : High pressures generated from a valsalva maneuver that you performed could generate the type of sound that you described if you had a perforation. Also, if you tasted your eardrops that could be an indirect sign of perforation as a pathway from your ear canal, through a perforation, down the eustacian tube, and into the back of your throat. If you haven't seen an ent, it may be wise to have this checked, get a hearing test, and discuss options for possible corrective surgery if you have a perforation, or other appropriate tympanomastoid surgery depending on the severity of the problem. ...Read more
I have otitis externa. Been using the ear drops for a couple of days now. Is it normal to hear myself chewing more in that ear when I eat?
AnotherQuestion?Wow: If you have anything in your ear it will alter the relative acoustics in a way that there is more transmission within your head than from outside, which would mask those inner sounds. Try putting in an earplug (on the good side) and enjoy the show! If that's a big problem for you, go on a liquid diet and take your meals in a subway or near the airport. ...Read more
All I can hear in my right ear is my heartbeat and its in constant pain. My dr gave me ear drops but they seem 2 be making it worse. What could it be?
Possible otitis medi: You may have a middle ear infection in which case ear drops won't work. Oral antibiotics may be necessary. You may have swimmers ear which is treated with antibiotic ear drops (you didn't say what drops you had). Either condition causes pain. The heart beat is from either acute inflammation or hearing loss. Pulsing heartbeat in the ear can be serious so see ENT if this continues. ...Read more
I've been prescribed ear drops for my ear. Before taking them I was fine, after taking them It feels like I lost hearing in my left ear, is it normal?
Not normal: If you were fine before, what was the indication for the ear drops? It is most likely the ear drops have deposited on the ear drum. This will block some hearing. Have an ENT doctor observe the ear under a microscope in office and suction the ear drops off the drum and it is most likely your hearing will return to its previous state. ...Read more
Would an ENT see me without a referral? I have narrow ear canals and I do get wax but on ear drops. Could narrow ear canals affect my hearing?
Sure: America is a free country, so a patient is free to choose her doctors, and her doctors are free to accept her or not accept her as a patient. Otherwise, we would not be free. Sometimes, one's insurance plan has limitations, so buy PPO (instead of HMO) insurance so that a referral should not be needed. Also, seeing a doctor outside the network (maybe self-pay) should not require a referral. ...Read more

I have a lot of ears wax and my doctor prescribed sodium bicarbonate ear drops. It's the second day and my hearing has got worse and I now have pain?
Otitis externa: The wax most likely softened and is now abutting the tympanic membrane (ear drum) or occluding the ear canal. Moisture accumulating behind the obstruction creates a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi resulting in ear canal inflammation and possible infection. The wax should be removed and probable treatment with antibiotic ear drops. ...Read more
Earwax buildup, doc cleaned out ears with syringe. Was told to use ear drops and come back to rinse some more, but now I hear "pulse" in left ear?
Hearing loss. Irrigation, olive oil & ear drops all failed. Any ideas doc? It's reoccurring, found out the other day I suffered /w bad ears as a baby.
See ENT: You most likely have a cerumen impaction (earwax build-up). Even though you tried some outpatient therapies for ear wax build-up it is still most likely. I would see ENT though so they can assess the cause of the hearing loss. If you don't have a cerumen impaction then there can be a more significant cause of your hearing loss. Not sure what "suffered with bad ears as a baby" means. ...Read more
5 days, no relief.DX'd by ENT w/ swimmers ear. On pain med, cipro, and ear drops. Went from 1 ear to both. Hearing loss. Swollen, sore nodes. Next step?
Check with ENT: Usually oral abx would not work well on swimmer's ears but wonder if there is already abx in your ear drops.
