Infection (Definition)

Infections are invasions of some other organism (fungus, bacteria, parasite) or viruses into places where they do not belong. For instance, we have normal gut bacteria that live within us without causing problems; however, when those penetrate the bowel wall and enter the bloodstream, ...Read more

If debris is present in the ear canal even after using the ear drops, can the infection recur when cessation of medication?

If debris is present in the ear canal even after using the ear drops, can the infection recur when cessation of medication?

Don'tMicroDitchDig: It's possible, but I wouldn't go batty trying to dig it out. If, after a few showers, you think there's still some in there and that bothers you, you really should have someone look at it again with the proper equipment, like, say....a doctor or nurse or PA-and not you, or your car mechanic. Usually, whatever debris is left has been sterilized by the drops but, it could set-up another infection.. ...Read more

Infection- ear canal. Prescribed NeomycinPolymyxinDex. Been taking properly for 4 days; hearing got worse. True that this drug can cause hearing loss?

Unlikely: No, it's unlikely that this drug will cause hearing loss. If you had a hole in the ear drum then the solution (not the suspension) could cause some issues but that's incredibly rare. The decreased hearing is likely from the buildup of pus and wax in the ear canal. You can do a gentle irrigation to get some of that out. ...Read more

Clogged ear feeling but no ear infection. Is that ear canal, tube?

Clogged ear feeling but no ear infection. Is that ear canal, tube?

Eustachian Tube: A clogged ear with no infection or fluid in the ear is usually the result of a poorly functioning eustachian tube. This is the connection from the middle ear to the nose, responsible for maintaining proper air pressure in the ear. When clogged, the ear feels full or stuffy. ...Read more

Ear canal swelling due to sinus infection. How do I get it to go down?

Painless Pimple/cyst in ear canal, busted. How should I proceed with cleaning out pus-afraid to clean with qtip due to pushing the infection deeper?

Allow drainage: To encourage spontaneous drainage of an abscess, warm moist compresses can by applied with gentle pressure. Squeezing or pressing on the site should be avoided. If possible, keeping the site moist by applying antibacterial ointment will help prevent crusting over, which prevents drainage (usually key in healing). ...Read more

I had my ear irrigated, then the ear canal became itchy, then I got a middle ear infection, now the infection has gone its itchy again? What will help

Tincture of time: And try not to submit to scratching the itch too much. This is likely self limited. Ask your doctor if there is some type of moisturizing or anti-itch cream you could put on (very small amounts) but I would not recommend applying it with anything like a q-tip or anything. Remember, nothing should go in your ear except your elbow! Lol! Hear! Hear! ...Read more

I currently have some kind of outer ear infection. All my jaw and my ear bones are very painful. Also inflamated ear canal. I took ibuprohene but not helpful. Was wondering if 1mg dilaudid for pain and cyprofloxacin or corticosteroid drop would help?

Hard to say: It is clear you have made some assumptions about what is going on. Without a proper exam, it is hard to consider using a prescription at all, much less a controlled drug that might hide important symptoms. Drops only work in some ear conditions, not most. It is time to go to urgent care and have someone find out what is going on. ...Read more

My mid ear canal infection was discovered after a flight home impaired part my hearing. Its now the 8th of 10 days im on biaxin (clarithromycin) w no improvement. Why?

Seros otitis media: More than likely you have sterile fluid in the middle ear. This can last for some time. You are not equalizing the pressure on each side of the middle ear. The eustachian tube is not functioning well and equalizing the pressure. There are some exercises to help with this and some medications to help. Give it a bit of time and if not responding, see an ent. You may end up with a tube placed. ...Read more

Why does my ear canal always itch? Only my right ear. No ear infection. Tmj on right side.

If fungal debris is present in the ear canal even after using the antifungal ear drops, Will there be a possibility of recurrence of the infection?

If fungal debris is present in the ear canal even after using the antifungal ear drops, Will there be a possibility of recurrence of the infection?

Possibly: There is always a possibility of recurrence of fungal infections due to re-exposure and possibly an innate susceptibility. There is no need to scrub your ear canals to remove "fungal debris" to reduce your risk. Simply keep your ear canals dry, keep your ear buds clean (possibly switch to over-the-ear style headphones), and see your physician for examination if you have any concerns. ...Read more

Getting over ear infection. Fluid gone. Feels like inflated balloon still in ear canal...Finished zpak antibiotic?

Be patient: The medication stays in your system for about 2 wks even though you finish it in 6 days. It can also take several more weeks for the residual fluid to be replaced by air. There may be a transient period where the eustachian tube does not function properly and leaves a vacuum like pressure in the middle ear. By 3-4 weeks from the start of treatment most will resolve. ...Read more

Do you know anything about mold in an ear canal? My sons ent says he has a yeast infection but it won't clear up. Could mold in our home be causing it?

Possibly though: Fungal infections in the ear is usually due to local factors in the ear, humidity, warmth and poor exposure to light; swimming, abrasion of the ear canal from excessive cleaning/scratching, use of antibiotics predispose to fungal infections. Several rounds of cleaning and antifungal drops maybe required for resolution. Option remains for oral of IV antifungals. Stick with the ENT; patience ...Read more

If Cortisporin is placed on an actively bleeding wound in the ear canal (no infection) can the neomycin be absorbed into the bloodstream. Ototoxicity?

Not Really Unless: Not really unless you put the drops every few hours. But the question is why would you use cortisporin drops in the ear when there is no infection. It is toop far fetched to think you will get ototoxicity from the drops, Why you ask this question? Not relevant on this site. Hope I answered to your satisfaction ...Read more

My daughter has ear tubes. Her ear canal is red and she is playing with it. Is it an ear infection.?

Possibly: Tubes do not prevent ear infections, despite the common misconception to that effect. That said, if the canal is inflamed, it can sometimes indicate an infection, so have her seen. You do not mention her age, but some children will have a tendency to play with their ears, just because they find them. Treat her for fever if she develops one, and have her seen. ...Read more

Antibiotics: If you have a sinus infection and those symptoms then you would need an antibiotic, a steroid nasal spray, two days of a decongestant spray such as afrin. Mucinex (guaifenesin) is an option to thin the mucus and possibly a decongestant pill like sudafed depending on certain factors in your history such as you blood pressure and heart status.
