Ear Canal Infection (Overview)

Otitis externa is an infection of the outer ear canal. Patients usually have pain at the outer ear, and there may be fluid draining from the ear. Often these infections are caused by water accumulating in the ear canal, such as after swimming, or if the ear contains excessive ear wax.

My mid ear canal infection was discovered after a flight home impaired part my hearing. Its now the 8th of 10 days im on biaxin (clarithromycin) w no improvement. Why?

Seros otitis media: More than likely you have sterile fluid in the middle ear. This can last for some time. You are not equalizing the pressure on each side of the middle ear. The eustachian tube is not functioning well and equalizing the pressure. There are some exercises to help with this and some medications to help. Give it a bit of time and if not responding, see an ent. You may end up with a tube placed. ...Read more

My 3 year old is on her 2nd set of pe tubes (t&a removed).Left tube is in the ear canal & is infectioned. Is it recommended/safe to replace this tube?

Ear tubes: If the tube has come out and infections return, it is reasonable to replace the tube. Consider adenoidectomy if it hasn't been done yet. Don't worry, your child will most likely grow out of this. ...Read more

How do I treat a swollen submental gland (under chin gland) and right ear inner canal infection?

How do I treat a swollen submental gland (under chin gland) and right ear inner canal infection?

Determine the cause: Lymph nodes are just the 'garrisons' of the immune system. We have more than 700 of these in the body. Typically, after an infection, the localized immune system will rev up- and a palpable lymph node can be found. I would seek out a doctor if this problem is not going away. Most commonly infections cause enlarged lymph nodes, but it's good to be sure in case it's anything else. ...Read more

Infection- ear canal. Prescribed NeomycinPolymyxinDex. Been taking properly for 4 days; hearing got worse. True that this drug can cause hearing loss?

Unlikely: No, it's unlikely that this drug will cause hearing loss. If you had a hole in the ear drum then the solution (not the suspension) could cause some issues but that's incredibly rare. The decreased hearing is likely from the buildup of pus and wax in the ear canal. You can do a gentle irrigation to get some of that out. ...Read more
