Dying Of Old Age Symptoms
I've heard ppl dying of old age. What does this mean? The body doesn't say "im old. Time to die" what is the medical cause of death when u die from age?
My grandmother is feeling intermittent weakness and pain in hand and knee joints. Are they symptoms of any problem or jst old age...P.S.- she is 80.
Hands & knees: They could be arthritis. The hand may have carpal tunnel problems.
Not necessarily: Obsessive compulsive disorder (ocd) tends to develop in the teen years (or younger), but this does not mean that it gets better as one gets older. What helps with OCD is cognitive behavioral therapy, supports, and/or medication treatments. One reason that it looks like its gets better as one gets older is more likely due to developing better strategies to manage the ocd.See 1 more doctor answer
I'm 19. I'm worried about cancers and brain tumors? Chances of it and symptoms? I want a long life. How can I live to old age? No cancer history.
Think happy thoughts: Worrying is the opposite of what will help you live long and be healthy. There are numerous things but the most effective are, eat a whole food, organic diet. Limit red meat intake. Eat wild fish and be sure they are not from regions with radiation or species known to have contamination with heavy metals or PCBs. Don't drink alcohol, don't smoke, don't use drugs, meditate, exercise, get outdoors.See 3 more doctor answers

I am 48 menopaused and suffering from symptoms. Am I at high risk if I take HRT knowing that I have 2 aunts diagnosed with breast cancer (at old age)?
Yes and No: Long term hrt does increase the risk of developing breast cancer. However the risk goes up by a small degree and that too only after prolonged use (5 or more years). Short term hrt is commonly used in those who have severe menopausal symptoms which may be debilitating. Go seek advice from your gynecologist.See 1 more doctor answer
Naturally: Getting shorter occurs among all races and both sexes. Height loss is related to changes in the bones, muscles, and joints, especially the spine. People typically lose about 1 cm every 10 years after age 40. Height loss is even more rapid after age 70. You may lose a total of 1 to 3 inches in height as you age. You can help prevent loss of height by following a healthy diet and staying active.
No strict definition: Clinically. Some studies used to have an age limit, but it was considered discriminatory. Some people are old at 40 others remain young at 80...As the song goes, young at heart. The consideration should be more "hale" or "frail" when medical decisions are involved. A lot depends on how many illnesses, medications, and organs no longer function well. Elderly sounds polite; old seems inconsiderate.
Prevention is best: By 'ivdp' I assume you mean intervertebral disc prolapse, or a slipped vertebral disc. Are you talking about prevention, or to treating existing pain, even disability. Prevention includes plenty water, healthy diet, regular exercise, & (esp. RE lumbar) avoiding prolonged sitting. Treating symptoms, depending on severity, may well require visit to clinician or physical therapist. Hope that helps.
Yes: Statistically speaking, both non-smokers and ex smokers are likely to live to a healthier old-age than smokers. Of course there are exceptions to every rule. George burns lived to be 100. He smoked 18 cigars a day and drank. At 92 he was asked what his doctors had to say about his lifestyle. "what can they say? They are all dead! ".See 1 more doctor answer
Depends: "old age" is a relative term. What was considered very old 40 years ago is very different then now. Genetics play an important role; but life style is equally important. If you live beyond 65, you can expect to live another 10-15 years, and the longer you live, the longer you can expect to live...Avg life expectancy is now over 79 for women- ethnicity and gender also play a role in longevity.

About 5%: This is just this pathologist's estimate. The diseases of extreme old age include a poorly-understood failure of the heart muscle, loss of physical strength required to breathe and protect / maintain the airway, and a mysterious unwillingness to eat that a wise caregiver respects. This is far higher than in the old days, when few people made it to age 60.
WHAT'S OLD TO YOU?: 80-90? 10-13% of the population is in that age group, last time I checked. And the numbers are growing. I believe as physicians we have been able to use technology and medical advances to keep people alive longer. However, please remember that it is up to you to have quality living. Excesses of youth will always come back to get us...
Osteoporosis: You don't have to lose height unless as long as your bones are in good shape.
