Rx books highlight that verapramil and clonidine as hypertension medications should not necessarily be taken together. Why is this?
Hypotension: Both medicines act to dilate vessels and decrease bp. Verapamil in addition has blocking effect on the av node and slows the heart. I don't think there was a study but there has been anecdotal cases wherein the combination of the two medicines caused severe hypotension and av block perhaps one highlighting the effect of the other. Hypertension: Current 1st line medication for hypertension or high blood pressure is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) like hctz (hydrochlorothiazide) unless you have a compelling reason eg diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, etc for something else.
