Depends: Some patients will only react to scrambled eggs while tolerating eggs in baked goods. When the egg allergen is baked, it changes the nature of the allergen. Some children with egg allergy need to avoid all egg products. Allergy RAST/blood (IgE) test reports no milk allergy. Is it possible I could still be allergic to dairy? Suffering from thick nasal mucus.
Yes: Either RAST (replaced by ImmunoCap IgE) and prick skin testing can miss some food allergies. I often test a patient to the food itself when the history and test findings do not match. Recently I was about to challenge a young boy to walnut (history positive, skin test negative) when the skin test turned out to be highly positive to the actual nut. Mold & mite allergies are more likely in HK. ...Read more

Type of reactions?: The term food allergy gets overused on a regular basis. For an allergy or intolerance the treatment is always the same. Avoidance. The best example of allergy vs intolerance is milk. Milk has protein (casein and whey),sugar (lactose) and fat. Only protein (with a few exceptions) can induce a true IgE mediated response. Stomach cramping, bloating etc can occur with intolerance to the other two. ...Read more
