What will help dry swollen nasal passages? & what causes this?

What will help dry swollen nasal passages? & what causes this?

Nasal saline spray: The first thing to try is simple nasal saline spray which you can get over-the-counter. Use it as directed. Also, there are some brands of "saline nasal gel" which can be sprayed or applied with a cotton swab to your nasal membranes. You might have allergic rhinitis or possibly some other underlying disorder causing the dryness. See your provider within a few days if the saline doesn't help. ...Read more

Rhinitis (swollen nasal passages). Oral steroids (medrol dose pack did not help much. Will nasal steroids not work then if oral ones did not help much?

Can swollen nasal passage and sinus cause partially blocked tear duct Ct scan showed no growths?

Can swollen nasal passage and sinus cause partially blocked tear duct Ct scan showed no growths?

Maybe: The tear ducts are small channels or pipe like structures that originate as a drain at the base of the tear sac. The tear sac is just below the inner corner of your eye. The drains hug the inside of the nasal wall & drain near the base. If they become swollen or blocked by debris they won't drain well. Eye surgeons can put a thin wire probe through through them to open the channel. ...Read more

Irritated swollen nasal passages (turbinates) for last 5 weeks. Tried nasal& oral steroids no relief. Was told to try Singulair. Will this help? Was told Not allergic but possible Non-allergic rhinitis. Can coloidial silver nasal spray also help?

Irritated swollen nasal passages (turbinates) for last 5 weeks. Tried nasal& oral steroids no relief. Was told to try Singulair. Will this help? Was told Not allergic but possible Non-allergic rhinitis. Can coloidial silver nasal spray also help?

Unusual first choice: Singulair (montelukast) is an unusual first choice for non-allergic rhinitis and as an add-on to high dose antihistamine treatment (I notice you're taking allegra and zyrtec). It could be for the skin rash if hives is a consideration? Also, 5-weeks is a bit short of a time period to conclude that this is non-allergic rhinitis. Just some general thoughts. ...Read more

Swollen nasal passages for three months. Nasal swab found large amount of coagulase negative staph. Doctor wants me to take keflex. I was on keflex for 5 years low dose to treat e-coli UTI which is now resistant to keflex. Wont staph be resistant to?

No: A person doesn't get resistent to an antibiotic, but a germ can. If you have not been on keflex in the past months it would likely kill off some of the germs on your body. However; I find coag negative staph to be a normal skin contaminant and not worthy of any treatment. Use of a simple OTC nasal steroid spray like rhinocort would help with most causes of nasal membrane swelling. ...Read more

I have empty nasal syndrome, what is the best solution to keep nasal passage wet? Its getting dry and block often.

Irrigate: I assume that by saying empty nasal syndrome you mean that you have had multiple sinus surgeries and have chronic nasal crusting and dryness. Unfortunately that is a consequence of outdated sinus surgery, though at the time this was thought to be the best modality. Irrigating often with a high flow saline irrigation, much more than simple ocean spray is typically quite helpful. I like the neilmed system that can be purchased from the grocery store and is inexpensive. Seeing your physician and considering adding pulmicort, something typically used to treat asthma or emphysema by inhalation into the lungs can be quite helpful with this condition. ...Read more

In winter my nasal passages get extremely dry at night if humidifier is off, but my wife seems unaffected by dry air. Why might I be more sensitive?

Men are from Mars!: Seriously, from a physiological or allergic point of view, it can be safely said that no two humans are alike, let alone a married couple. If you are already more prone to allergies, it is a given that you would react more to environmental changes such as dryness or humidity. If your wife doesn't mind humidity at night, you are better off than couples who race to adjust thermostats all night. ...Read more
