Avoid alcohol: People who have reduced salivary flow have increased bacterial populations in their mouths, and some of those bacteria produce mercaptans as a by product of cellular activity. Mercaptans are sulfur based, rotten egg smells. So you need to reduce bacterial populations and increase hydration. Try using a Fluoride rinse 3x a day and avoid alcohol based rinses. Can use sugar fee candy to help fluid. ...Read more

Might be: Chronic dry mouth can be of neurological or endocrine (glandular) origin. It could lead to breath issues as well. If you aren't taking any meds, many of which have this as a side effect, a visit to your primary care provider could be helpful to figure out the dry mouth. One thing that can help bad breath for many is to add brushing the top of your tongue to your oral hygiene regimen. ...Read more

Low tech solution: I know this sounds "unusual", but I have some patients who hold a small polished pebble in their mouth throughout the day to stimulate a salivary flow without either dissolving or supplying the sugar that bacteria love so much in a dry mouth. Something that you would feel comfortable speaking around maybe the size of a Lifesaver candy. There are special lozenges with Xylitol in them that help too ...Read more

Also, talk to you doctor who prescribed the medications to see if there are alternative drugs that won't dry out your mouth.
