Four broken ribs in middle back 7 weeks ago. Pain is gone but now have persistent dry cough and shortness of breath. Is this possibly hemothorax?

Pneumothorax: Your symptoms are unlikely to be a hemathorax (blood in chest cavity) or pneumothorax (air in the chest cavity) though not impossible. With a residual pneumothorax, the symptoms you describe can occur. You should get a chest X-Ray and see your physician to be sure you do not have some partial lung collapse from not deep breathing for a prolonged period of time.

Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Have cough and colds. I have stuffed nose and dry cough. Having shortness of breath and chestpain. What can I do? I feel anxious. Pls help im 26f

Hmmm: Especially during times w/ chest pain - don't smoke at all! Also, if you've tried various OTC symptom relief and drinking lots of water, gargling, rest w/out effect - go to a doctor for exam and treatment. Feeling anxious did not cause this and it will not help it. If your blood pressure is high at your age (the Rx you show) you need to get advice on diet, exercise, stress reduction, etc. Best2U! ...Read more

I have a pressure on my left side, back pain, dry cough, severe fatigue, shortness of breath and bad headaches, what could be causing this?

Many things: The left sided pressure if in the chest and occurring with exertion could be coronary artery disease. The cough, fatigue and shortness of breath could be heart failure, pneumonia, or lung cancer. These are the most serious possibilities, but there are many more that are less serious. The headache and back pain could be separate and there are multiple possibilities for these. ...Read more

Right heart cath: An ECHO is a reasonable screening tool for people at risk of having pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH) including those with Lupus, however most experts agree that a right heart catheterization should be performed if the ECHO is abnormal in to most accurately assess the valves and to assess the various pressures in the different heart vessels and heart chambers. ...Read more

I have Chest ache on left, heart palpatations, dry cough, upper left back pain, shortness of breath and feeling nausia, any idea on the problem?

Need an exam: With those symptoms and the smoking history, I'd be most suspicious of a pulmonary problem like pneumonia, but there's a long list of possibilities, and you really should have someone examine you and listen to your lungs. Based on that, they might consider further testing. Feel better! ...Read more

I have had a dry cough for like two months now, and now it is accompanied by shortness of breath and constant mucus in the lungs, what could this be?

Be seen: It could be several things, from an infection to more chronic lung diseases. If pneumonia, it sounded atypical at first, but you may be getting an infection on top of it. Emphysema (COPD) can act this way, as can asthma. Drug reactions can cause cough. Lung cancer also has to be considered. Shortness of breath is a serious problem and needs more evaluation. ...Read more

Shortness of Breath: Shortness of breath can be dangerous so call your pcp to be sure it is not a sign of something more serious. Lot of bloating, dry cough, sometimes but mostly at night and shortness of breath. Took a lung test and said technically satifactory normal but showing mild lung disease can I be treated?

Dry cough: Dry cough can be caused by a form of acid reflux called laryngopharyngeal reflux (lpr). Sometimes LPR is 'silent' meaning that no hearty burn is noted. Stop caffeine, alcohol and late meals and try otc acid blockers (omeprazole). If your cough continues see a pulmonary doctor. ...Read more

Dry cough for about 8 months, coughing up a whit foamy mess everyday, short of breath and wheezing?

Dry cough: I always wonder about medication side effect esp ACE inhibitor, when someone reports dry cough. Allergies & acid reflux can also do this. But if short of breath & wheezing, we start wondering about asthma & COPD (emphysema) since that cough could be an attempt to get air out while wheezing represents difficulty getting air in. Best to see your Family Doc for complete evaluation. ...Read more

I was diagnosed to have bronchiectasis disease. Symptoms short of breath, fatigue & dry cough. Is this related with cold & can be cured?

Uncertain: As to your question. Your condition is not "cold realted" if you are referring to the environmental temperature. Surgical excision of the involved pulmonary segment is the only "cure", however medical treatment (antibiotics, respiratory therapy) is usually sufficient!
Hope this helps

Short of breath while eating, talking and laying down. Feels like something squeezes air out of me. Dry cough when it happens. Non smoker. No anxiety.

? Airways problem: Airway hyper-responsiveness, or twitchy airways can be the cause, in other words some sort of asthma. Acid reflux, overweight, physical activity + other triggers can induce symptoms in susceptible patients. A simple peak flow respiratory measurement before and after bronchodilator can give us a clue, or spirometry. At any rate you need to be evaluated by your doctor who would better direct your care ...Read more
