Does she hav asthma?: If she has history of asthma or allergies? If not she need formal chest x-ray and pulmonary function test. Some times it can be granulomatous condition. If it is asthma or allergies she need antihistamines or inhaled steroid on daily basis to prevent recurrence of flares. I hope this helps. Try this: If acute, likely due to a virus, Try humidifier by your bed, and change water every day. If no humidifier, try steam shower. Keep head of bed elevated. Drink plenty of fluids and rest your voice, including whispering.

Consider a few..: I see this frequently in the rough winters where I practice. Many older people become more sensitive to the cold temperatures, causing bronchospasm in the lungs and therefore coughing when exposed to the cold. Also, the extreme dryness of the air can contribute to this and cause more coughing. Try a cool air humidifier in the rooms she is inhabiting. Sad that you are feeling sick. From reading about your symptoms, it does feel like you are having a viral infection. Common symptoms of flu are fever, cough and body aches. Your symptoms could also be caused by a virus (flu causing organism is also a virus) and is usually self remitting. This means you likely don't need antibiotics. LPR: Laryngopharygeal reflux is when a small amount of acid comes up into the throat and irritates it. It is a common cause of dry tickle cough, chronic sore throat, lump in the the throat, post nasal drip, phlegm in the throat, and throat clearing. Many studies show it responds best to proton pump inhibitor rx, like Nexium, Dexilant, (dexlansoprazole) Protonix, etc. See an ENT MD for laryngoscopy to diagnose it. ...Read more
