Is loose stool always unhealthy? I drink a lot of water and eat a lot of salad. I also take around 700mg of vitamin C a day

Not always: Generally loose stools mean that things are moving relatively quickly through your intestines, which water and salad would encourage.700mg of vit. C is unlikely to affect this. Conversely, hard dense stool has spent a long time transiting the intestines. In general, it is healthier to have food and waste move quickly thru the GI tract than linger too long, so loose stools are often not a problem. ...Read more

Water will soften: However, if she has a stool impaction, then the water will just build up behind it or go around it. She may benefit from stool softeners, senna or exlax, or magnesium citrate. If those do not help, she could possibly use suppositories. Best of luck and I hope this helps. ...Read more

Loose stool for a few months now, no pain at all. I had a baby recently and am drinking more coffee -- could caffeine cause this?

Possibly...: How loose are the stools & how much coffee are you drinking? Caffeine is a very weak diuretic, but a useful "cathartic, " ie, intestinal muscle stimulator. If you drink a pot or two of strong coffee, you will most definitely move those bowels at least daily. As long as you stay well hydrated, make lots of urine, your pulse rate is normal for you (60-100 bpm), and there's no blood in BMs, it's ok. ...Read more

Not worrisome: Perhaps you had a stool plug which has now passed. A "good news" is that you have not described bleeding per rectum. Changes in bowel pattern are however a "red flag" to doctors.
