Sonogram (Definition)

Ultrasound can give us two-dimensional, and in some applications three-dimensional, images of structures and organs in virtually any part of the body. In addition to diagnostic uses, such as evaluating abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, and breast, ultrasounds are commonly used to guide needle and catheter placement in a variety of surgical ...Read more

Can a yolk sac be mistaken for a twin pregnancy in 8 week ultrasound?

Can a yolk sac be mistaken for a twin pregnancy in 8 week ultrasound?

Hope Not!: By 8 weeks, it should be fairly easy to see 2 fetuses with their own hearts. This is a good time to define number of gestational sacs and placental disposition. Exactly what are the credentials of the person doing the sono? That is very important. ...Read more

I am 6 wk pregnant and went to ER last night, they performed an ultrasound.. I was told that I have twin gestation, one with possible obligted ovum?

May be too early: At 6 weeks, it may be too early to see what is called a fetal pole or a heartbeat. I would recommend following up with your doctor in the near future. If you are not having a lot of cramping or bleeding, it would be worth it to wait about 2 weeks and recheck the sonogram when it will be easier to see if you are pregnant with one or two babies. Good luck. ...Read more

My hCG is over million. On early ultrasound there was 1 baby seen. My pregnancy is determined healthy an not molar. Why such high hcg? Hiding twin?

No.: You may still have a molar pregnancy, even if a heartbeat was seen (partial mole). I would still be concerned about a complete mole given such a high hcg. Even a twin pregnancy doesn't normally go that high. ...Read more

Can a pregnancy ultrasound miss a twin? I had an early (8 weeks) ultrasound and the doctor said she couldn't rule out twins at this point. Could another baby really be "hiding"? Only one heartbeat detected, so i don't know what to expect.

Possible twins: The fetus is "really small" at 8 weeks, and another could be hiding. Usually they won't say something like that unless there is some hint at twins though, unless it's really a thing they always add to protect themselves. I'd ask why they said that. If it's standard language, don't worry about it. Otherwise, there might be something they were looking at. ...Read more

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more
