Still Controversial: John, I'm still not completely through the book, but the premise is one that I am beginning to agree with--namely that carbohydrates are the "root of all evil." Keep in mind that this assertion is still very controversial, and you will find some doctors who agree with it and some who do not--which is true of almost any new idea amongst doctors. Take care and stay well! ...Read more

How safe is a tonsilectomy? I am having mine done at the mayo clinic by dr david lott in arizona.. People keep telling me how horrible it is. I am having it done for sleep apnea ans huge tonsils.. ..
Typically very safe: A tonsillectomy is typically a very safe procedure and has been performed on millions of people for many years. No procedure is completely safe, however, so your surgeon will go over all of the potential risks with you before the surgery. As with all procedures, you have to do a risk/benefit analysis. Since you have sleep apnea from large tonsils, it sounds like there could be benefit to you. ...Read more
Finding a doc here: To find a specific doctor here, you can look at his profile page. He may have a Concierge Practice as well, but you will be charged to message him through that system. His profile might give his location and a even an office phone number or a link to his practice. Doctors participate in this forum, whenever they have time, and for some, that is not very often. Health and wellness: what are some legitimate criticisms to david agus' book "the end of illness? "
Probably none: Basically it is a book about diet that is appalling in the U.S. I agree that it is the major cause of disease. If you put the wrong fuel into your car, you know what would happen. First it might run poorly and eventually it might ruin the engine. Our bodies and particularly brains run efficiently when we give it the right food. ...Read more

Hi David, I'm having shoulder trouble, I fell off my bike and landed heavily on my elbow, I have pain in the shoulder. It's a bearable pain during everyday movement but and big movement backwards and across my body is incredibly painful, can you help?
Possibly serious: The duration of these symptoms are important. If only a few days, give it time (10-14 days) to heal with REST and protection. If it has already been more than a few weeks, you should see a doctor--suggests serious shoulder joint or rotator cuff injury. ...Read more
Hello doctor.... Iam David 25years old my left eyesight is 0.75 right eye is 0.50.... Is that normal. In future is eyesight increase or decrease?
Well. The normal: Eyesight is 20/20. Now depending on your lifestyle and genetics you may eventually need to wear corrective lenses that is if you are not already wearing them. Some eyesights remain stable with corrective lenses, some improve and in other cases your correction may increase as you grow older. ...Read more
Neurologist and author, David Perlmutter, claims that gluten causes Alzheimer's. Can someone provide journal references on research that proves this?
Fully disagree: There is NO solid evidence anywhere that gluten causes Alzheimer's disease, and there is NO relationship with Celiac disease and dementia, but Celiac disease does cause a Peripheral Small Fibre Neuropathy. We have some anecdotal cases of gluten sensitivity affecting MS indirectly, and maybe transient worsening of other conditions, but no Alzheimer's links. ...Read more
Neurologist david perlmutter in his new book "grain brain" says to eliminate whole grains and fruit from my diet to avoid alzheimer's. Should i?
Grain Brain: Grain brain contains some life changing ideas. Whether you adopt all the suggestions depends on your clinical status. Staying off wheat is probably a good idea for most of us -- other grains like amaranth, quinoa, etc are better. If you're Insulin resistant at all, you might need to be careful of very sweet fruits that increase your blood sugar. Berries, apples, etc are less a problem. ...Read more

I'm in s. J area appt w dr black - pyschiatry monday w/ insurance 145$ need a willing dr 2 help ween off 30mg valium?
Psychiatry appt.: I'm not sure what you're requesting here, since you already have an appointment with a psychiatrist with whom you can discuss tapering valium. The doctor will want to know where you are with your anxiety, and maybe develop other treatment options as needed. Less habit-forming medicines are available, and hopefully the "behavior therapy" you're working in is helping. ...Read more
I am told that my patellar is not tracking correctly. My dr. Advised a j-brace, but it is incredibly painful. Is that normal, will the pain subside?
Not normal: If the brace is truly helping your tracking, it should be less painful, not more. You need to be re evaluated to see if the brace is being worn correctly, or if another type of treatment will be necessary. ...Read more

Respected dr. How can I confirm I have mild fatty liver. J stopped ethanol in 1996. Now I take 30ml max. After dinner. Is it safe? Regards
Imaging of the liver: May support the impression of fatty liver. If there is a strong "need to know" then a biopsy would be in order. If you are concerned then the biopsy would also determine if there is old damage from etoh. That would give you the best information to discuss these issues with your doc. ...Read more

Do I need to go see a dr at this point? Hello – can anyone help me with a continuing foot pain I have? I injured it running at the end of july. I’m pretty sure it’s planters fasciitis – pain in heel for a while, then relocated to 2 toes lately (probably j
While it's entirely possible to develop plantar fasciitis from an injury, by far, the most common presentation with plantar fasciitis is the slow, gradual onset of pain with no associated trauma. Pain is commonly described as heel pain, worse especially after rest.
If you injured your foot back in july and you're still having pain, there is a fair chance you may have broken a bone or tore a ligament. I would therefore say yes, by all means, go get this checked out. I only hope that you haven't waited too long, because if it's been fractured or a ligament torn for all this time and you've been walking on it, the odds of a complete recovery at this point is severely compromised.
Please go to either a podiatrist or foot& ankle orthopedist and get checked out. ...Read more
