Ever since I took doxycycline, my upper stomach has a dull pain type of discomfort. How do I get rid of this feeling?

Pill esophagitis: Doxycline can cause an esophagitis which is inflammation of the esophagus. This is usually self limited, and can be relieved by medications prescribed by your doctor. However I would make an appointment to see your physician to make sure there are no more serious problems which your physician can assist you with a thorough history and physical examination. ...Read more

Is it possible to first experience side effects after a week of being on doxycycline? I suddenly have bad unexplained stomach cramps whenever I eat.

Is it possible to first experience side effects after a week of being on doxycycline? I suddenly have bad unexplained stomach cramps whenever I eat.

Possible: Doxycycline can certainly cause gut upset and it may begin several days after beginning treatment. This may occur if you aren't always careful to take with bland food and adequate liquid. Spicy food, empty stomach makes stomach cramps more likely. But avoid antacids which can bind the antibiotic & keep it from being absorbed. If symptoms persist, though check with your doctor! ...Read more

I wanted to know is cefadroxil monohydrate easier on your stomach than doxycycline?

Probably yes, but...: ...there are differences in the kinds of bacteria best treated with these two antibiotics. If you are having stomach problems with doxycycline and your doctor has prescribed cefadroxil instead, go ahead -- it should be easier on your stomach. But don't make the change on your own, only with your doctor's advice. In the meantime, you can lessen doxy's effect on the stomach by taking it with food. ...Read more

Getting stomach pain from doxycycline. What can I do to prevent this?

Probiotics: Consider probiotics when taking antibiotics. Multiple strain products provide more balance than single strain. You need to have enough of the probiotic to make a difference - billions of viable bacteria per gram is better than millions. Cultures need to be alive - except for greek or bulgarian yogurt & specialized probiotic yogurts – the average yogurt has mostly dead cultures. Take care. ...Read more

Treated for chlamydia, 2 pills azithromycine, 2 weeks of doxycycline, lower right abdomen still in pain after treatment, do I still have it? Only symptom I had w/ chlamydia, could the test have been wrong?

Pain after tx: It's unlikely the test was worng - not impossible, but very unlikely. As to whether you still have it, chlamydia symptoms can range from none to severe pain/fever/illness. So the leftover pain may be peristent infection, or just inflamation in the area where the infection was. That inflammation takes time to clear up after the infection is treated. I would ask doc if need to be tested for cure. ...Read more

I'm allergic to Sulphate drugs and am currently experiencing severe abdominal pain while taking Doxycycline Hyclate 100 mg. I do have IBS.

Not uncommon: Doxycycline should be taken with food to avoid this common side effects. If you still have GI problem you will need to find a substitute. By the way, the proper term is sulfa allergy not sulfate (which is not known to be allergenic) but this or IBS has nothing to do with your doxy side effect. ...Read more

Does doxycycline cause chest tightness, fatigue, and stomach pain? What should I do?

Stop the doxy: If you think it is the doxy, then stopping it for a week or 10 days makes sense (and if everything clears consider trying it a second time just to be sure). Doxycycline can cause esophagus and stomach irritation (the chest tightness and stomach pain) and worry about what is wrong, the fatigue. ...Read more

Wbc 7.7, rbc 4.6, neutro 48%, lymph 33%, high abs eosphinils 1024, all else normal. Had diahrrea/stomach pain 1month. On doxycycline. What's happening?

Big picture: The high eosinophil count should just raise an eyebrow to the possibility of your having met a worm -- perhaps strongyloides or ascaris. Was a diarrheal stool sent for ova / parasites? Beyond this, we're not going to be able to do much with this. Lab reference ranges are set so that several percent of normals fall outside on either end ...Read more

My Dr suspects IBD (due to stool sample result) - awaiting colonoscopy. Taking Doxycycline for Lyme. Am I likely to get C Diff? Currently have upper abdominal cramps, are they normal with Doxycycline?

Not uncommon: Doxycycline needs be taken with food but even then many people have gastric upset from it. It is impossible to predict whether you will have C difficile problem but I would recommend you take a probiotic whenever you are on an antibiotic. If your stomach still bothers you, ask your doctor to Rx an alternative. ...Read more
