Can doxycycline treat acne? How long it's going to take to treat acne?

Can doxycycline treat acne? How long it's going to take to treat acne?

Not by itself: I see that you also have thrush and if you do, perhaps this isn't the best time to start on doxycycline. I trust you have been using topical benzoyl peroxide and this is the basis of your treatment. Usually you see good results in a few weeks with an effective anti-acne combination. Spironolactone, the birth control pill, or topical clindamycin are other possibilities. ...Read more

I'm on doxycycline for acne treatment. Is there any way that I can discontinue safely? Read reviews online and they are not pleasant

No big deal: This is no big deal. Just do it. And put your online searching into context; sounds like you have found some alarmist information. Limit to reliable professional sites. Doxycycline is very safe to take and very safe to stop; nothing bad will happen. If you feel you need to stop, first discuss alternative acne management with your doctor. ...Read more

If I take doxycycline for acne but have infection like strep, do I need different antibiotic in addition to doxy or instead of doxy or what?

If I take doxycycline for acne but have infection like strep, do I need different antibiotic in addition to doxy or instead of doxy or what?

Probably different: If you develop any bacterial infection while taking doxycycline, usually the bacteria causing it will be resistant to doxy. (If not, the infection wouldn't happen.) So usually an additional antibiotic would be needed to treat it. But not always; and most infections are caused by viruses and don't respond to any antibiotic. Check with your doctor; never treat yourself for a presumed infection. ...Read more

No: Review this with your prescribing doctor and switch to another nonantibiotic medication. Long term use of antibiotics has been shown not to stop acne recurrence. Birth control is more important than taking antibiotics for acne when other medications are more useful. ...Read more
