Birth Control Pills (Definition)

Also known as oral contraceptives, birth control pills are highly effective oral medications that use hormones to prevent pregnancy. There are two main types of birth control pills: one with estrogen and progestin (also known as the combination pill) and one with just progestin. The two main ways they prevent pregnancy are: 1) The hormones thicken the cervical mucous, which keeps sperm from entering the uterus on their way to the egg; and 2) By maintaining a level of hormone in the blood stream that prevents the ...Read more

I took emergency contraceptive two weeks in a row now I've been bleeding for almost 2 weeks. Can I take birth control pills to stop the bleeding?

You can but...: You can utilize the oral contraceptive, but Plan B was a hormonal product as well which is why you are having withdrawal bleeding. Consider "riding this bleeding out" and allow the body to reset on its' own. By the way, use a alternative non hormonal contraceptive until this period passes next month. ...Read more

That: That is abnormal to have that much bleeding especially when you are on those medications. As you have had your period for three straight months, please see a family practice or gynecology doctor to have an evaluation. You may need to get your blood level checked. They may need to adjust your medication. If you have pain, light-headedness, or fainting, then you would need to be seen as an emergency. ...Read more

Dr put me on birth control pills to regulate periods. After my periods ends 3 days later I again have bleeding? Is this Normal.? Should I stop pills

No: First check a pregnancy test as this a common cause of bleeding on the pill. Second make an appointment with your physician about the bleeding. You probably just need a different pill or different dose, but I tell my patients to finish out their current pack and transition to the new birth control so they don't end up pregnant. ...Read more

I missed five birth control pills and started bleeding, can I stop the bleeding by taking the missed pills now, or is there any other way to stop it?

Restart pill cycle: Hi. Restart the pill cycle when it's convenient for you to. If you start a new BCP cycle now during the period, you're protected from pregnancy. If you don't, and postpone going back on BCPs, you should use another means of birth control until a couple of weeks after starting back on BCPs. Using combination birth control pills, a period is expected if you miss 5 days of them. ...Read more

From last two months bleeding only spotting on first day and second day later stops I was taking birth control pills from one year but the problem?

Incomplete question: Your question did not come through in its entirety. You may wish to restate.
Menstrual irregularities are not uncommon and anovulatory cycle is a common cause. If you miss more than two periods it would be time to see your doctor. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time. You may consider implanted contraceptive or an IUD.

I missed my birth control pills for a couple days and now can't stop bleeding, what should I do? Okay so I kind of forget to take my birth control sometimes and after the third day I forget it, it makes me start bleeding. And that lasts about 4 days. But

Generally: Generally if you miss one pill you can double up the next day. If you miss two pills you can double up for two days (two one day and then two the next). If you miss more than two pills you are at risk for pregnancy and should use backup birth control (condoms) for the rest of that month. Missing four pills and then taking four at once will not protect you from pregnancy. Regarding the bleeding, you will probably bleed on and off until you have started your next month of pills. Use condoms and just keep taking one per day. ...Read more

26 year-old woman is unable to stop Nordette (ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel) birth control pills after 8 yrs of use, due to heavy vaginal bleeding upon Nordette (ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel) discontinuation.....?

What are goals?: The answer depends on your long term goals. If you do not want more children then an endometrial ablation is a good option. Assuming you do want more children then other options can be considered. Testing for PCOS and hypothyroidism could be done. Since you are missing periods followed by heavy bleeding PCOS seems likely. A sonohystogram should be done to see if a polyp or submucosal fibroid is present. If present then these can be surgically removed as an outpatient. If pregnancy is desired later on but not now a Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD could be a great option. This often stops bleeding. If you are satisfied with the pill you could just continue ...Read more

That: That sounds frustrating. Since you failed oral contraceptives, you could ask about a different formula of pill, or you could try an implantable device, such as implanon, which inserts in the upper arm, lasts 3 years, and after the first several months most patients don't have any bleeding, or mirena, (levonorgestrel) which is inserted into the uterus, lasts 5 years, and again after the first several months most women do not have any further bleeding for the 5 years. ...Read more
