Is a diabetic double amputee overweight a good candidate for prosthetic limbs?

Is a diabetic double amputee overweight a good candidate for prosthetic limbs?

Depends: The level of amputation is most important as the higher the amputation the more difficult it is to walk with the prosthesis. Diabetes by itself is not a problem if controlled. Foot care is crucial to prevent amputation of the other leg. Weight might limit the options an amputee has as prosthetic components have weight limits. Inability to tolerate exercise is another limiting factor.

Low-back pain in transfemoral amputees: is there a correlation with static or dynamic leg-length discrepancy?

Low-back pain in transfemoral amputees: is there a correlation with static or dynamic leg-length discrepancy?

Anytime: You have a change in your prosthetic components you will put stress into your lumbar spine which will result in abnormal forces there. Also being a transfemoral amputee, do you have a flexion contracture at the hip? If so, this will also place stress on the spine. Recommend seeing a physiatrist that can help with adjusting your prosthesis and abnormalities associated with amputation.

How long dose a quad bypass last I had one 10 years ago not smoked for 11 years been diabetic 15 below knee amputee 2 years.

Can't give a number: It's unusual for a female to have 4-vessel disease @ 26 so I think there's something genetic here. While genes can't yet be treated, other risk factors can. Glad that you quit smoking & hope your diabetes is well controlled. Your weight, blood pressure, cholesterol & triglycerides also need tight control. Your bypass will last longer if you address all these issues & I do wish you the best.

Heart Disease: I assume you are referring to a coronary artery bypass surgery. The extent of how long your blood vessels will remain functional and unclogged is a difficult one to answer! Some bypass surgeries are good for life while others may become diseased or "clogged" after a short amount of years. Multiple factors dictate this such as cholesterol, sugar levels and genetics.

Prosthetic fit: These are common signs of an ill fitting prosthesis. The residual limb after an amputation often changes shape and the prosthetic socket needs to be modified or replaced. Contact your prosthetist or physical rehabilitation physician for evaluation. Once the possibility of an ill fitting prosthesis is determined your physician can investigate other possible causes.

I am a below the knee amputee and recently I have been dealing with lower back pain when sitting for extended periods could they be related?

I am a below the knee amputee and recently I have been dealing with lower back pain when sitting for extended periods could they be related?

Could be: The difference length in other parts of the limb may occur over time. (difference in thigh muscle girth) This might lead to a bit of a pelvic tilt and eventual unequal weight distribution on the articular elements in the lumbar spine. Plin films of the LS spine can reveal facet joint disease for example. Your therapist need to be made aware of any bone remodeling to adjust your therapy over time.

Notalgia paresthetic: This may be nostalgia paresthetica. The cause for this is not completely understood but several treatments are available. Some over the counter treatments can be helpful including cortisone creams or capsaicin cream. The capsaicin cream may cause a burning sensation. Consult with her physician to evaluate for other possible causes and to make sure that the her medications do not interact.

I need something for pain and depression. I've been a double amputee since January, 2015. Still don'T have prose this and haven'T started physical thearapy. I need anti depressants?

I need something for pain and depression. I've been a double amputee since January, 2015. Still don'T have prose this and haven'T started physical thearapy. I need anti depressants?

Please discuss: These issues with your doctors as soon as possible. Depression warrants treatment, pain may worsen the symptoms, and vice versa. If you’re suffering with depression, you may require meds, therapy (individual, group, etc), as both meds and therapy often works better than either one alone. Good luck!

Inhaler not often: There are reports of testing positive for methamphetamine while on inhalers. There are 2 types of meth. The D form is the illegal street form and the L form is the legal form of methamphetamine found in cold mess for example. Ask to have the test redone looking for the D and L form good luck

What is the cause of phantom pain in amputees?

Many factors: The exact cause of phantom limb pain is not completely clear. Cutting the nerves that went to the limb and later attempts by the body to heal the nerve play a role. It is also known that the area of the brain that controlled movement of the limb prior to the amputation may interpret sensation from the stump as coming from the amputated portion of the limb and that this might be painful.

What would prevent an amputee from wearing prosthetics?

Multiple reasons: Successful use of a prosthesis depends on many factors. Walking with a prosthesis requires more energy than usual walking so one of the most important factors is the person's ability to tolerate the increased physical effort. When the body can tolerate the activity, a good rehabilitation team (physical therapists, prosthetists, psychologists and rehab physicians) is crucial for success.

About 6 weeks: After the amputation is healed a prosthetic leg is usually fabricated in 6-8 weeks. Every prosthetic is custom and several fittings are required before the final product is received.

Why reasons would make an amputee unable to wear prosthetics?

Many possibilities: If the person has the increased physical energy necessary to walk with a prosthesis a good rehabilitation team that includes physical therapists, prosthetists, psychologists and physical rehabilitation physicians (physiatrists) can help the vast majority of amputees return to an active lifestyle.
