Ive used: Several different probiotics and I have not heard of this, but of course there are so many different products, i can't say anything about the one you use. I like florastor or align and they do not cause black stool. Black stool can be from blood in your stomach from an ulcer or from use of pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) or other bismuth containing meds. I was unable to find black stool listed as a side effect of milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide). Did you take any iron or pepto bismal? Yes: The active ingredient in kaopectate--bismuth subsalicylate--turns stool a dark color. It can turn green or black and can persist a few days after stopping the medicine. Probiotics: Most people don't need probiotics after taking a course of antibiotics, since the normal bacterial flora of the gut repopulates rapidly after stopping antibiotics. If you have a history of C. difficile, it may be useful to take probiotics, however. Otherwise, studies do not support their routine use. Diarrhea returned 3weeks after taking clindamycin for 5 days. Yogurt (probiotics) made diarrhea better. Possible in the case of c difficile colitis?
Clostridium: CDiff does have a significant relapse rate. It has to be 100% liquid in order for the lab to process the sample. Young people can tolerate symptoms much more than the elderly or ill and therefore tend to go on with the infection a lot longer before seeking treatment.
