Dominant Cold Nodule And Reduced Activity Of The Thyroid Gland
I got thyroid results today and it was " Diffusely heterogeneous thyroid gland without discrete dominant nodules." what does that mean?
Heterogeneity: Heterogeneous means the size is irregular in terms of thickness throughout. Homogenous is the opposite and would mean the gland is uniform in size. Nodules are important to find because they can be functional or "hot" nodules that secrete too much thyroid hormone. May be thyroiditis. See endo for follow up. ...Read more

Pregnancy: Thyroid cancer in pregnancy is uncommon. Most thyroid cancers diagnosed during pregnancy can be observed until delivery. Thyroid nodules: A very small percentage of thyroid nodules can be cancer. That is why your doctor will examine them with ultrasound and perform needle aspiration biopsy on them. If the nodule is suspicious appearing, it may need to be surgically removed. However, most are harmless. You may need to see an endocrinologist. ...Read more
For thyroid gland is boarderline enlarged. Right has single nodule likely adenoma. What does this mean?
Probably benign: Many thyroid glands are enlarged, and borderline means just slightly above normal size. The only way to tell if a thyroid nodule is benign or cancerous is with a biopsy. I'm on Euthyrox for life cz if I stop I get nodules in my thyroid gland. That's all I know. Would you please explain more about my condition? Thank you
Probably not related: If you require thyroid hormone for life, then stopping it may result in an increase in the overall size of your gland (a goiter) which should shrink when you restart the hormone, but nodules are generally not caused by stopping thyroid hormone. You should check with an endocrinologist about this. ...Read more

Follow up nodule: thyroid nodules are very common especially in older patients. The vast majority are not cancer and just hyper plastic nodules (overgrowth of normal tissue). In young patients like yourself thyroid nodules should be watched more closely. A nodule less than 1 cm in size does not require biopsy unless there are suspicious features such as calcification or increased blood flow. Talk to your doctor. ...Read more

Means abnormal test: Ultrasound is a commonly used test for detection of Throid nodules which are quite common. Diffusely heterogeneous thyroid gland with multiple bilateral hypo echoic micro nodules. Increased vascularity. What does this ultra sound result mea?
Thyroidologist: A thyroidologist or endocrinologist is best qualified to evaluate and advise you about your thyroid status and ultrasound findings and to determine whether a needle biopsy and/or referral to a thyroid surgeon is advisable. As a rule multiple nodules are more apt to be benign as opposed to a single cold nodule in males. Follow-up in these cases are also important even after the first consultation. ...Read more
Multinodular goiter: Hi. Your hyper-functioning nodule is producing thyroid hormone without pituitary regulation. Since you have multiple nodules, chances are they're all overproducing thyroid hormone (aka "hot" nodules). Your radio-iodine scan will tell. Any "cold" nodule of certain size will need to be evaluated to make sure it's not cancer (you may not have any cold nodules). Treatment with 131-Iodine is easy. ...Read more
