My 28month (2 1/2 y/o) and I both have food poisoning.. and stuck in bed any ideas how to make the symptoms (throwing up and chills) more manageable?

Gastroenteritis: The question is whether you both have a viral gastrointestinal infection rather than food poisoning. Either way treatment is simply rest, intake of adequate fluids including flat ginger ale which settles the stomach, and use of Tylenol for aches, pains and feverishness. Diet should be light with broth, salitine crackers and advancing to soft, bland foods. Symptoms should resolve in a few days. Read more

My niece who's 3 has been throwing up almost for 12 hours. No fever, no food poisoning. She can't even get any medicine she throws up. What can it be?

See a pediatrician: Your niece is at risk of becoming seriously dehydrated and should be seen by a doctor, both for diagnostic purposes as well as to check her for the secondary effects of inability to keep things down. There are antinausea preparations that can be given by rectal suppository. Go and have her seen and hope she is better soon. Read more

Does food poisoning sensitize your stomach for several weeks?

Does food poisoning sensitize your stomach for several weeks?

It can: One problem with food poisoning is that the normal bacteria that belong in your gut get disrupted. This can cause problems for a long time (taking antibiotics can make that even worse). Try taking a probiotic formula that has multiple bacterial strains. Use that for at least two weeks to help restore the normal balance. Read more

Immediate pain with eating in stomach...Is this food poisoning?

Immediate pain with eating in stomach...Is this food poisoning?

Not likely: Food poisoning comes from toxins that are already in food - it usually takes hours for symptoms to start. Gi infections from contaminated food usually take longer (12-48 hours). Immediate pain after eating is more likely to be a GI disorder like an ulcer or gallbladder problem, but it could also be from a food allergy. Read more

What physical toll does having food poisoning have on your organs other than your stomach?

What physical toll does having food poisoning have on your organs other than your stomach?

Kidneys: Inmost cases, there are no problems with other organs. But the organs you worry most about are the kidneys. Dehydration from food poisoning could cause kidney failure, which is why staying hydrated is so important. In addition, some types of e.Coli infection may damage kidneys directly (not through dehydration). The risk is increased when it is treated with antibiotics. Read more
