Does Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) contraception ever cause teenagers to have suicidal thoughts?

Does Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) contraception ever cause teenagers to have suicidal thoughts?

Yes: It is possible for any hormone to cause a change in a person's normal moods. That includes hormones contained in birth control pills as well as androgenic hormones like testosterone. The mood disturbances caused from exogenous (from outside the body) hormones can become so severe that a person can even feel suicidal. I would discuss with your prescribing physician immediately any such symptoms. ...Read more

Does pmdd often cause you to have suicidal thoughts as a teenager?

Does pmdd often cause you to have suicidal thoughts as a teenager?

Not often: Pmdd in an otherwise healthy person is usually manifested by irritability, crying, and perhaps rages. Thinking about death is very common in adolescents. Most don't go further than to muse (alprostadil) about being dead. Those who do not talk about their feelings are at greater risk of actually attempting or completing suicide. If you have these thoughts, it's best to discuss them with your doctor or parents. ...Read more

Can I talk to my psychiatrist about suicidal thoughts without her telling anyone about them? I'm a teenager.

Can I talk to my psychiatrist about suicidal thoughts without her telling anyone about them? I'm a teenager.

Depends: This is a difficult question to answer. The psychiatrist is, first and foremost, concerned about your safety. Just about everything you discuss with your psychiatrist is completely confidential. However, when it comes to things such as suicide, the psychiatrist will use their professional judgment to decide whether it is necessary to tell someone else. ...Read more

Levlen (ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel) birth control gave me suicidal thoughts, thrush (first time), no libido. Is Norimin better?

Levlen (ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel) birth control gave me suicidal thoughts, thrush (first time), no libido. Is Norimin better?

Side Efects: If your side effects were definitely due to the BC, than any other BC with a different type of hormonal combination etc. would be a better alternative. With your all your symptoms I would question whether they aware all indeed due to the BC. Be sure to follow-up with your Dr. and get assessed and possibly treated for an underlying depression that was brought out by the situation. Best wishes. ...Read more

Why would paroxetine antidepressant cause an increase in suicidal thoughts for teenagers?

Why would paroxetine antidepressant cause an increase in suicidal thoughts for teenagers?

Assuming causation: Many depressed people who are started on an antidepressant (ad) are already in the process of worsening, and many times medication is prescribed while a patient's symptoms are spiraling. So, in some cases, the suicidality was going to emerge as a natural course of that person's worsening depression, and the ad simply failed to work, which is quite different than "causing" suicidality. ...Read more

Forgot to take my birth control pill (Yaz) & I was 20 hours late. Besides contraception issues, how bad is it for my health to take it that late?

Forgot to take my birth control pill (Yaz) & I was 20 hours late. Besides contraception issues, how bad is it for my health to take it that late?

Take it Now: If you are late taking just 1 pill, it may not give you much trouble. Some women will experience breakthrough bleeding which is irregular bleeding in this cycle. It will definitely reduce your birth control efficacy. I always advise patients to use another form of birth control if they miss a pill. do not think in general they pose significant health issues. ...Read more

Can dioxycycline (for 70days, trip to india) interfere with the effectiveness of my bc (yaz) ? Back-up contraception advised?

Can dioxycycline (for 70days, trip to india) interfere with the effectiveness of my bc (yaz) ? Back-up contraception advised?

Yes: Doxycycline, like many antibiotics, are preferentially absorbed when taken at the same time as an oral contraceptive pill decreasing the absorption of the birth control pill and therefore its' effectiveness. Space the Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) pill and the antibiotic 12 hours apart, and consider a "back up" means of contraception during the 70 days of the doxycycline. ...Read more

I have 3 more pills of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) to take - how long until my COC (Yaz) is fully effective again? Should I use a secondary method of contraception?

I have 3 more pills of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) to take - how long until my COC (Yaz) is fully effective again? Should I use a secondary method of contraception?

Yes: Trimethoprim, one of the ingredients in bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim), (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) mildly induces the liver to process the hormones in birth control pills faster, theoretically reducing their effectiveness. The half life of bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is only 8-10 hours but the enzymes that are induced take longer to return to normal levels. The usual recommendation is to use a backup method for 7 days after finishing bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim). ...Read more

Either one: The difference is minimal. They contain a slightly different Progesterone which should be undetectable to a person taking it. There is no issue switching from one to the other. Use whichever one is cheaper. ...Read more
