Sleep hygiene: Do not start taking xanax (alprazolam) for sleep unless panic attacks are keeping you awake. Xanax (alprazolam) is not a hypnotic and can be very addictive. You first need to examine your situation. Do you take naps during the day?; do you drink a lot of caffeine during the day? Do you have sleep apnea? Do you snore? Are you on medications that perhaps are keeping you awake? Do you exercise? Do you snore? ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Maybe, but danger: Upjohn originally proposed xanax (alprazolam) in the 1970's as an antidepressant, showing effectiveness like tricyclics. The fda only allowed it as an anti-anxiety agent "that doesn't cause depression" [like others do]. It's a benzodiazepine; it may have some antidepressant effects but isn't effective alone. Induces dependency very easily and is hard to get off of. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22786504. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Does citalopram and Xanax (alprazolam) affect the erection., I have been using since one year, for depression?

However, there can be other causes such as depression, anxiety and medical issues. I would suggest discussing this with your physician. If it is from the citalopram, there are ways to address this. If it's from something else, there is help also. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I am taking citalopram 20 mg once a day for a month now but dont really see a diffrence in my depression or anxiety. i was thinking Xanax (alprazolam) might help?
Give it time: Depression/anxiety medications in that class tend to take at least 4-6 weeks to start working. You may be a candidate for a higher dose or an additional medication, though, if you aren't feeling ANY change at 4 weeks. Check back in with your doc and let him/her know how you're feeling. Do yourself a favor, and stay away from the xanax (alprazolam). ...Read more
Depends on what you: mean by effective. Xanax (alprazolam) will reduce anxiety short-term, but does not really have any significant beneficial effect on depression. Like other benzodiazepines, Xanax (alprazolam) causes physical dependency and tolerance, with a requirement for more and more medication, doing less and less over time. Antidepressant medications and psychotherapy are better ways to treat both conditions. Best if used short-term. ...Read more
Alprazolam is a short acting benzodiazepine, it does not last long in the system . So when used regularly with multiple doses to treat anxiety, it is associated with inter-dose withdrawal, tolerance and a resulting increase level of baseline anxiety. So in anxiety clinics, we use it only in cases of " flight , dentist or other infrequent anxieties, ...Read more
