Will a small dose of Xanax (alprazolam) cause seizures?

Will a small dose of Xanax (alprazolam) cause seizures?

Seizures: Some experts feel that chronic use of benzodiazepine (xanax, valium, ativan, (lorazepam) clonazepam) may lower seizure threshold, specially in patients with epilepsy or predisposing disorders. This is beyond the withdrawal mechanism which can occur even in low dose use for long time. Thats why rarely used for a long term in seizure disorders. If I take half of my .5 prescription of Xanax (alprazolam) can it cause a seizure? This would be my first time taking it since I got them.

Very unlikely: Xanax (alprazolam) does not provoke seizure activity, and if you are taking appropriate anti-epileptic drugs, you should experience NO issues, when you restart your Xanax (alprazolam), other than perhaps more drowsiness if interacts with certain meds. You have a good strategy to resume. ...Read more

Can you take Xanax (alprazolam) as needed for "freakouts" when prescribed buproprion XL, or does that cause a seizure risk? If Xanax (alprazolam) is used once or less per week?

Probably ok: The seizure risk you are concerned about is related to,the bupropion XL , not the interaction with Xanax (alprazolam). The seizure risk increases with dosage so I would speak with your doc about your concerns. Use the Xanax (alprazolam) only as PRNs for "freakouts" rather than a regularly taken med since the risk of dependency is high. ...Read more

Xanax (alprazolam). Is it safe? Can it cause seizures or death? I was prescrprescribed .5 mg. I am only going to take half. Please ease my mind.

Safe if used right: Your Doc eased your mind by prescribing what they felt was best for you given your overall condition. Nobody else can do better to answer your question than they can. If you're asking about potential side effects & consequences then, Xanax (alprazolam) & any drug like it can cause seizures or death if abused. Since you're unsure with the doc's choice why not discuss with them? Better than changing yourself. ...Read more

Do not: All meds should be stopped only after asking the prescribing dr, who will tell you how. Do not stop on your own, mainly this drugs. I've been taking .5mg of Xanax for panic for a bit over a week with day breaks in between, now 1mg for 4 days. is there a risk of seizures if i stop?

Unlikely: Xanax is very short acting and with just 4 days into 1mg, your brain unlikely got used to it. It's with longer acting anti-epileptic drugs that you need to worry more about withdrawal seizures when stopping them cold turkey (i.e. phenobarbital). If you are concerned, take 0.5 mg for few days before coming off completely, but you will likely be fine either way 1 mg to zero or 0.5 mg to zero. ...Read more
