Does WPW syndrome affect life expectancy?

Does WPW syndrome affect life expectancy?

Depends: If diagnosed and properly treated (usually with a procedure called an ablation) one can have a normal life expectancy. However, prior to treatment a patient may have a fast heart rhythm that can be dangerous and potentially life threatening. ...Read more

I am diagnosed having WPW syndrome during my pre employment medical. I am tense whether employer will accept me with it. I want to get treated it. How?

Typically the: Electrical activity in the heart will be studied and a "fast pathway" will be found. The cardiologist can usually ablate that pathway once found. ...Read more

Is WPW syndrome a genetic disease?

Is WPW syndrome a genetic disease?

Yes: While WPW syndrome is genetic, not every patient behaves or is treated the same way. A good percentage of the WPW population will not need any treatment as they do not have fast heart rates (arrhythmias). At the other end of the spectrum however, live patients with WPW who may need ablation or possibly an icd. The proper course of action is determined by an electrophysiologist usually. ...Read more

I'm on propranolol for WPW syndrome. I usually have a coffee that contains 150 mg of caffeine every morning. Is this safe? I haven't had a problem yet

I'm on propranolol for WPW syndrome. I usually have a coffee that contains 150 mg of caffeine every morning. Is this safe? I haven't had a problem yet

Maybe, maybe not: Caffeine is a mild cardiac stimulant. Heart rate may increase. Ectopic beats may increase. Cardiac conduction time may shorten. But not all WPW is the same - there are electrophysiologic differences between individuals. Bottom line: can't say if caffeine is safe for you. If you have tachycardia on propranolol (caffeine or not), discuss ablation with your doctor. ...Read more

Have Wpw syndrome (not currently being treated for) and detoxing from heavy methadone additiction (3+ years) Should I be concerned?

Certain medications: ...do increase the chance of heart rhythm problems in people with WPW but we're not certain about methadone. As to methadone withdrawal, it's MANDATORY that you detox under close supervision of an experienced addiction specialist and a cardiologist. You may need an anti-arhythmic drug and a very slow methadone taper. Suboxone can help reduce withdrawal symptoms and detox stress. Dr. Anne. ...Read more

What is the definitive treatment for Wolff-Parkinson-White (wpw) syndrome?

What is the definitive treatment for Wolff-Parkinson-White (wpw) syndrome?

Ablation: Ablation of the aberrant fiber, typically using catheters through the groin (rather than open heart surgery), will typically 'cure' the condition and is successful in 90-95% of cases. ...Read more

Why is there a delta wave seen in Wolff-Parkinson-White (wpw) syndrome?

Why is there a delta wave seen in Wolff-Parkinson-White (wpw) syndrome?

Pre-excitation: Wpw syndrome is commonly diagnosed on the basis of the surface ECG in an asymptomatic individual. In this case it is manifested as a delta wave, which is a slurred upstroke in the qrs complex that is associated with a short pr interval. The short pr interval and slurring of the qrs complex is actually the impulse making it through to the ventricles prematurely (across the accessory pathway) withou. ...Read more

Does wolff Parkinson's white (wpw) syndrome occur during birth?

Congenital: Wpw is the syndrome associated with an extra (or accessory) pathway between the top (atria) and bottom (ventricle) chambers of the heart. Yes this is present from birth. Patients with the extra electrical connection may have episodes of extreme tachycardia (rapid heart beat). This can be treated with medication or by ablating the extra pathway in a cath lab. ...Read more

Does Wolff-Parkinson-White (wpw) syndrome cause seizures?

Does Wolff-Parkinson-White (wpw) syndrome cause seizures?

Not directly: Wpw is a heart condition associated with cardiac arrhythmia. The classic arrhythmia is supraventricular tachycardia. More serious rhythm problems can also occur and there is an increased risk of sudden death. During arrhythmia, cardiac output can drop, and some people have seizures during times of low cardiac output from arrhythmia. ...Read more

Nuclear stress test for type b WPW syndrome?

Are cell phones safe for patients of Wolff-Parkinson-White (wpw) syndrome to use?

How important is a nuclear stress test for type b WPW syndrome?

Kristalose 20 grams 2 x daily for constipation. Is this safe and a good dose? Any side effects? I have SVT/WPW syndrome.

Constipation: Constipation in an otherwise healthy person is usually due to inadequate fiber and fluid intake, and is especially prevalent in Western society due to the widespread use of processed foods combined with a high intake of non-vegetarian foods. Adding fiber supplements e.g. Benefiber, Metamucil, Konsyl and Aloe Vera helps. Lactulose also helps by fighting the colon's effort to dehydrate the stool. ...Read more

I have WPW syndrome. I also have hypoglycaemia. Sometimes my glucose drops to the low 50s at night. How badly could this affect my heart?

Having WPW and low: glucose have nothing to do with each other. WPW does not predispose you to anything with regard to your heart except arrhythmias. Having a low glucose is worse for your brain than it is for your heart. Have your health care provider help you to adjust your diet to maintain normal glucose levels round the clock. For your brain's sake. Your heart will be perfectly fine. ...Read more

What medication does the ER administer during a severe episode of SVT caused by WPW syndrome? Adenosine is contradicted with WPW right?

WPW: Procainamide (pronestyl) given intravenously has been successfully used in such cases. Adenosine can be given as long as the qrs is narrow. Electric cardioversion can also be performed. Beta blockers can also be tried iv. In my experience, procainamide has been quite effective although it is an older medication. Ideally a cardiologist would be available to treat such a patient. ...Read more
