Intake + Absorption: Vitamin b12, aka cyanocobalamin, is common in a huge variety of foods; low intake rare. However, none of us absorb B12 directly. Instead, the cells of the upper ⅔ of the stomach which secrete hydrochloric, hcl, acid also produce & secrete a protein, called intrinsic-factor, which binds b12. The small intestines absorb intrinsic-factor with whatever B12 is bound, & the B12 is thereby also absorbed. ...Read more

Whoa: If you have been prescribed B12 injections or other suitable replacement therapy based on sound evidence (i.e., labs and a real diagnosis), and you refuse to take them, you will pay for it with your health, your mind, and ultimately your life. Decisive treatment: Don't know if it's the cause of your itch, if you are B12 deficient, either from an ill-advised experiment with a vegetarian lifestyle without supplementation, or pernicious anemia or harboring a fish tapeworm, you had better start getting supplemented now and continuing or you are going to end up with brain damage. Forgive my frankness, and I hope your physician made this clear as well. ...Read more

My doc said that the level of vitamin b12 in my blood was at the 1200 level. Is that still cause for concern even when my other blood work was fine?
No: That is at the upper end of normal or a little out of range on high end depending on which lab you are using. Levels that high are usually associated with supplementation. Depending on how much, how frequent and by which method (oral, sublingual, injection) you can back off on dosing frequency if you like. If you feel better keeping it at that level then no harm done. ...Read more

Not much: High B12 is never worrisome. Low platelets, especially if below 100, 000, need to be addressed with a physician who knows how to do a differential diagnosis and workup. Eosinophils over an absolute count of maybe 1000 should prompt a good history and physical exam and perhaps stool for ova and parasites. Labs are adjuncts to diagnosis and ranges are set to flag a few % of healthies. ...Read more
Not at all likely: Almost no chance of a direct link, but... We do know that: 1) the b vitamins are important to nervous system functioning. 2) B12 can make a noticeable difference in how good one feels. 3) deficiencies are (by definition) good to correct. So, do try to improve your diet and even supplement nutrients that are hard to get enough of. See a professional for ocd treatment too. ...Read more
