Using Benzoyl Peroxide As A Chemical Peel
Benzoyl Peroxide-: (bpo) is an oxidizing agent that has antibacterial properties that help with acne care. It can cause drying of the skin and result in skin peeling, skin redness and stinging until tolerance to these side effects are reached. Bpo works quite differently form a peel and cannot be used like a chemical peel. Both can work: It depends on your skin sensitivity but BPO is typically Rx'd with clindamycin and can work well together. Sometimes it can be too irritating and salicylic acid can also help. If you have a sal acid wash try it for a few weeks and see how you do and can switch if you need to. ...Read more

I'm using alpha-h skin care. Contains aha and glycolic acid. If I start retin-a do I discontinue aha/glycolics? Can I use retin a (tretinoin) .5% once every week?
Not both together: I recommend using one or the other and not both together, as both medications have a slight exfoliating action and are likely to cause more side effects if used together. To my knowlege, Retin A (tretinoin) comes as 0.05% and that is the stronger formulation. I suggest starting with 0.0125% or 0.025% first to see how your skin responds. ...Read more
Retin A (tretinoin) Micro diluted with Emolene moisturiser. Is this effective for comedonal acne? Derm asked me to leave it on only for 10 minutes every day.
I want to use a glycolic acid cleanser followed by a salicylic toner followed by a retinol serum. How much time should I leave in between?
Let it dry.: Be sure you dilute and remove all of the glycolic and let skin dry completely before applying the salicylic. You may get irritation with retinol over the salicylic, so best to let it dry first and if so, don't use them together. You could use a hair dryer on cool to make this quicker. Good luck! ...Read more

For better facial skin, should I wash with water only or use a face wash with ingredients like salicylic acid?
Water's fine: Warm water and if dirty, mild soap is all you usually need. Salicylic acid and its derivatives are keratolytics (agents which cut through skin cells and can thin the skin, reduce the size of calluses and the like). Skin normally sheds on its own--half of household dust is human skin! ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

What should I use as an exfoliator for peeling skin from using differin (adapalene) 0.1% gel? I've been using for 5 weeks; this is the 1st time i've had peeling.
No need.: Most retinoid creams (including differin) cause peeling sometimes, especially during cold weather. Often, all you have to do is apply a little less each night. You can also use a light moisturizer if you wish (one that says "non-comedogenic" on the label). If the peeling persists, try skipping a day of treatment. But exfoliation just causes more peeling in most cases. ...Read more
