It is low...: Have your doctor explain the results so you can understand what the plan will be. Most likely it is an anemia due to iron deficiency, but need to rule out genetic reasons like thalassemias. Treatment is via iron supplements or foods rich in iron like green leafy vegetables, meats, beans and iron enriched cereals. Egg yolks are also a good source. ...Read more

See below: When the body experiences stress there is a natural tendency to increase the sugar levels in the blood to get ready to "fight or flight". This is a normal response. Stopping a child from getting angry or sad is virtually impossible, but the effects should be self limiting. Blood sugar levels naturally rise and fall during these occasions. Your friend can discuss further with endocrinologist. ...Read more

My baby has two crowns (where the hair starts) on her head. Is it normal? Or does it indicate some problem?

Normal: It may mean while her hair is shorter, she is prone to cowlicks (where the hair stands up). I am not aware of this being something to worry about though. When her hair is longer, you won't even notice. ...Read more

You don't mention your numbers but lower normal or upper normal are just variations of normal. If the dr didn't send you off for additional testing i would assume things are ok. ...Read more

Consult your doctor: In most cases, formula provides almost everything a baby needs for the first four to six months. The only exception is vitamin D. Babies who drink less than 32 ounces of formula a day need a daily 400 IU vitamin D supplement. You should always consult your doctor before dosing on Vitamin D. ...Read more

How dangerous is it that my vitamin d-25 level is only 8 as measured in my blood tests. Does it mean i can have a heart attack or anything else?

Increased risk but..: Low vitamin d is associated with increased risk of heart attack, many cancers, autoimmune disease ; lower life expectancy, but these are long-term risks ; youre not likely to develop any of these before you can reverse your deficiency. Your body should be able to heal much of the damage related to having had low d. Your most immediate risk is influenza, as low d is associated with reduced immunity. ...Read more

1 : 1 in 2000 children are born with a limb deformity ranging from a missing part of a finger to missing entire arms and legs. Most of the time, the cause is unknown. Sometimes it can be caused by a genetic defect, chemical or drug exposure in the first trimester (such as thalidomide or agent orange in the 1960's and 1970's), or amniotic band syndrome. I don't know of any specific syndromes that tie in with his other health ailments. ...Read more

My aunt has had blood cancer that is now leukemia. She heard that acai can eradicate most of the leukemia. Does it work, how well and in what dosage?

No: Please don't do this- acai won't eradicate any of her cancer, nor anyone else's either. It's a great berry and a wonderful breakfast food but it's not a cancer treatment in any sense. Leukemia is a serious condition but there are a number of good, accepted, standard of care treatments that can have remarkable efficacy. ...Read more

Bloody stools: I am not a pediatrician BUT bleeding per rectum is NOT normal.
That skin tag or mole needs to be evaluated.
The range of what be the cause is vast.
From your post I can't say for sure if she needs to go to the Emergency Department right away BUT she needs to be seen and examined by a physician to decide on a plan of action. ...Read more

Is it worth banking stem cells when my baby is born from the umbilical blood in hope that it may be able to some day help my son with coa heart defect?

Hard to tell...: There is no requirement that a parent should bank a baby's cord blood, and it is fine not to do it. Some parents may choose to bank cord blood if they want to buy the "extra insurance", so that they will have cord blood available in the unlikely event that their baby needs a bone marrow transplant or their baby needs to use his own stem cells for some other reason. ...Read more
