Codeine: Is an addictive drug and occasionally used as stimulant. I do not recommend it although it is over the counter without prescription. The cough is self limited or better check with a lung doc. In my humble opinion, it should be removed from the shelves. ...Read more

Cough: Unfortunately most (prescribed by physicians) cough suppressants have sedative effects. The 'Dayquil and Nightquil' popular OTC brands have enough alcohol, a bad idea. Try some cardamom seeds (slowly suck for 3 - 10 minutes). Also make sure the person is not on medications hat can induce cough (ACE inhibitors).
