Not if levels normal: If your thyroid hormone levels were normal prior to surgery and have been kept normal on synthroid, (thyroxine) then no, it will not cause weight loss. If you had your thyroid out for thyroid cancer and they are keeping your thyroid hormone levels high, then yes. ...Read more

Synthroid (thyroxine) dosage: The low TSH usually means that you need less thyroid supplementation. The caveat is that your doctor may be suppressing your TSH with higher synthroid (thyroxine) dosing for other reasons eg if there was worry of thyroid cancer etc. Please check with the prescribing physician. ...Read more

Thyroid: There are a lot of variables so it is tough to say what the problem is. Are you taking enough synthroid (thyroxine)? Is your t3/t4 normal? Do you overeat, snack on sweets/junk food, eat too many carbs? Do you exercise (not walking but real cardio exercise)? You made need to one, a few, or all of these things. ...Read more

Weight Gain: Certainly Thyroid may be causing some of your issues too. Safely, exercise and dieting with decreased carbs and fats will make you lose, if you burn more calories than you take in, you will lose weight. If you are unable to lose, discuss with your Dr. as approved weight loss meds ar available, but they need to monitored regularly by the Dr., and used with an exercise program and diet as well. ...Read more

Synthroid (thyroxine) dose: After thyroid ca, the synthroid (thyroxine) dose is adjusted to suppress pituitary TSH (which stimulates thyroid ca). It may make you a little hyperthyroid, although it should not make you hyperthyroid to the point of tremor, nervousness, palpitations, etc. If your ft4 is normal, and you otherwise feel well, then the weight loss may be a welcome side effect. Depends: Your thyroid level may be normal only because you're on replacement. If that's the case you'll need it for life. You can try a couple of months without it, but when your TSH goes back up you'll just need to restart it. Make sure, however, that you take brand name replacement, as the generics are cheap, but variable and unreliable. ...Read more
