possibly: Plica or shelf(s) syndrome that is clinically signifigant generally causes 'popping' or 'catching' when you bend your knee.It may feel like it is 'giving way' if it hurts when it 'catches'.Most plica are asymptomatic.Sometimes patellofemoral instability and pain can be confused w/a plica.See an ors and get 2nd opinion before considering surgery. No: The joint should not have any appreciable fluid in it normally. Fluid can be there from many reasons. Arthritis can cause fluid. Also surgery can cause some bleeding in the knee which can cause the fluid to build up. The fluid makes the joint stiff and makes it hard to get a good quad function. ...Read more

Should you ask your doctor for synovial fluid analysis if you have chronic joint problems with multiple surgeries?

Likely not useful..: Joint fluid analysis is of limited usefulness unless suspected having infection and/or gout, and maybe some rare rheumatologic conditions. Beyond these few conditions, there isn't much else that needs synovial fluid analysis. If you have had multiple joint surgeries, especially in same joint, i would expect that this is already done.
