Does Soy Formula Cause Constipation In Babies
Infant constipation. We have tried prune juice oatmeal and soy milk and nothing is working. Can we use a stool softener and what foods to avoid.?
Natural plugs: Apple sauce, bananas & rice cereal are the main constipators in most infants. Peaches, pears, plums & barley cereal are usually helpful in loosening them. Prune or apple juice (regular adult, not dilute baby) given in amounts of 1-2 ounces 1-2 x/day for a minimum of 3 days will usually loosen a kid. Good luck.
Not the formula: Constipation can be a temporary finding in babies. Since they eat formula, the natural assumption is that formula causes constipation. However, it's best to have the doc look at the baby and determine if the baby needs testing for other medical conditions or try ways to soften the stools without changing the formula unnecessarily.
Is constipation on a 5w old enough reason to run to the doctor? Baby strains and cries when pushing the stools. Clay consistency on soy formula.
Clay consistency: Is not really constipation. Your baby is still adjusting to life and feels discomfort when this happens. Crying for help and expressing his feelings. Discuss with your pediatrician if this persist. May need to change formula, offer some water in between feelings. Help him push the stools out by pulling his legs up against abdomen and massaging gently below the navel.See 1 more doctor answer
Soy formula fed baby sleeps, feeds, and urinates very well. However, she has been constipated and in pain when straining. What remedies can I try?
No: Thrush is an infection caused by a fungus (sometimes called yeast) this type of infection is common in babies because their immune system is still developing. Fungal infections are common in warm moist areas like the mouth, diaper area (especially the creases) and folds of skin such as under the neck. It is not related to type of formula. Antibiotic use can increase yeast infections.See 6 more doctor answers
Which formula is best for weight gain in babies & won't cause constipation? My son is 9months old & weights 7, 8kg, uses infacare formula at the moment
Our 1 month old on soy formula is constipated once a week. How often can she be given a suppository? Any suggestions on helping with constipation?
Dark karo syrup: Add a tablespoon or two to a bottle of soy milk to improve his bowel movements.
One year old was on a soy formula and has been off for a little over a month. Been struggling with constipation since. What kind of milk would be best?
2% milk or soy milk: Some toddlers do get constipated from the casein in milk, especially if they are also getting a lot of other dairy in their diet, such as cheese and yogurt. Soy milk is ok to give, as it also has calcium and a complete protein. He needs at least 2-3 calcium/dairy/soy servings a day for bone health. You may improve constipation with giving prunes, bran cereal. Almond milk is low in protein.
My son has been on soy formula for over a month now, and has been very constipated, now his stool has changed and it's very hard balls and it black?
Constipation: Soy formulas are usually more constipating that others., Rapid formula changes is best avoided (give a 2 week trial). A common trial sequence is: cows milk based, lactose-free, soy, elemental. In the meantime, take a rectal temp to stimulate the anus to relax. Blood, vomiting, poor feeding & irritability are emergencies. Lactulose is a well tolerated stool softener for babies (Rx)
My 1 month old on soy formula has been constipated. Tried prune juice and it's not helping. How often can a suppository be given?
My children are constipated constantly, 1 & 3. I add benfiber milk and it seems to help some. Both were on soy as baby, help?
Hard age to work wth: Constipation occurs if digestive debris moves too slowly thru the gut, has excessive moisture extracted &/or the kid decides to skip poos. Foods like apples, pasta, breads slow transit while juices speed it. Most parents stop rx too soon.Fiber or MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) taken daily are fine for months at a time. A simple rx rule is to rx for twice the duration of the pbm. Recurrence is common until kid decides to help.
Can switching soy base formula to regular milk base, harm by 3month old baby? If babies stay on soy base, will that effect her when she gets older?
Varies: There are babies that are intolerant to milk based formulas, either to the protein or the lactose sugar. These kids will be chronically fussy, have acidic stools or otherwise a mess. If your kid can eat, digest and act comfortable on a milk based formula it is ok to switch. You might want to review the idea with the doc, some use soy for kids with galactosemia and a change to could be harmful.
Depends on situation: Some folks prefer the bovine protein as more human like & there is some question whether the soy lives up to its quality. That said, most kids would never have any appreciable difference in growth/development either way. The exception comes if a kid is intolerant to one. If so, the other product or a specialty formula like alumentum would be less likely to cause GI symptoms.
Positioning: What is the age of the child? If older than 3 months and if severe GERD I would consider adding rice cereal 1 tablespoon per 4 oz of the formula to thicken the feed. In a baby less than 2 months I would try positioning in a 45 degree position after feedings for an hr to see if it helps. Fomula switching will not improve GERD if that is the correct diagnosis.
Absolutely: Alimentum and nutramigen are the first two that are readily available that come to mind. They are a bit more expensive, but very easy to digest and no soy anything. They don't taste as good, so if the baby scoffs at eating them, can put one drop of vanilla in the entire bottle to flavor.
My baby drinks soy isomil infant formula and every time he drinks it his eye swell. Is that an allergic reation.
Possibly: If it happens every time, it is probably some type of reaction, mild allergy. Talk to your pediatrician....
See a Specialist: This is a complicated question that cannot be well answered in only 400 characters. The problems with formula may be allergy or lactose intolerance or several other things. You should have the baby tested for soy and milk allergy and you may need to try several formulas before you find one that is well tolerated. Enfamil AR thickens in the stomach so it is less likely to reflux back up the esop
My infant has had runny seedy poos for three weeks now and cries a lot after feeds. Is it ok to mix/wean soy formula with his milk based formula?
Can Pedialyte and water be used for infant constipation? My 7 wk old has hard stools and pain since switching to AR formula for reflux.
Define constipation: Breast fed kids may go a little every feed or one bulky stool every 7-10 days & if soft they are not constipated. Most formula babies go 1-2xd. Any stool that is dried out is constipation & a sign things are not moving along fast enough. Gas is from air swallowed or gas produced by gut germs. Fussy is whatever baby feels pissy about often fatigue.
