Does Soy Formula Cause Constipation In Babies
Infant constipation. We have tried prune juice oatmeal and soy milk and nothing is working. Can we use a stool softener and what foods to avoid.?
Natural plugs: Apple sauce, bananas & rice cereal are the main constipators in most infants. Peaches, pears, plums & barley cereal are usually helpful in loosening them. Prune or apple juice (regular adult, not dilute baby) given in amounts of 1-2 ounces 1-2 x/day for a minimum of 3 days will usually loosen a kid. Good luck. ...Read more

One year old was on a soy formula and has been off for a little over a month. Been struggling with constipation since. What kind of milk would be best?
2% milk or soy milk: Some toddlers do get constipated from the casein in milk, especially if they are also getting a lot of other dairy in their diet, such as cheese and yogurt. Soy milk is ok to give, as it also has calcium and a complete protein. He needs at least 2-3 calcium/dairy/soy servings a day for bone health. Hard age to work wth: Constipation occurs if digestive debris moves too slowly thru the gut, has excessive moisture extracted &/or the kid decides to skip poos. Foods like apples, pasta, breads slow transit while juices speed it. Most parents stop rx too soon.Fiber or MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) taken daily are fine for months at a time. A simple rx rule is to rx for twice the duration of the pbm. Recurrence is common until kid decides to help. ...Read more
Can switching soy base formula to regular milk base, harm by 3month old baby? If babies stay on soy base, will that effect her when she gets older?
Varies: There are babies that are intolerant to milk based formulas, either to the protein or the lactose sugar. These kids will be chronically fussy, have acidic stools or otherwise a mess. If your kid can eat, digest and act comfortable on a milk based formula it is ok to switch. You might want to review the idea with the doc, some use soy for kids with galactosemia and a change to could be harmful. ...Read more
Depends on situation: Some folks prefer the bovine protein as more human like & there is some question whether the soy lives up to its quality. That said, most kids would never have any appreciable difference in growth/development either way. The exception comes if a kid is intolerant to one. If so, the other product or a specialty formula like alumentum would be less likely to cause GI symptoms. ...Read more
Positioning: What is the age of the child? If older than 3 months and if severe GERD I would consider adding rice cereal 1 tablespoon per 4 oz of the formula to thicken the feed. In a baby less than 2 months I would try positioning in a 45 degree position after feedings for an hr to see if it helps. Fomula switching will not improve GERD if that is the correct diagnosis. ...Read more
Absolutely: Alimentum and nutramigen are the first two that are readily available that come to mind. They are a bit more expensive, but very easy to digest and no soy anything. They don't taste as good, so if the baby scoffs at eating them, can put one drop of vanilla in the entire bottle to flavor. ...Read more

My 12 week old formula fed infant appears to be constipated. Is there anything I can do to help him have a bowel movement?
Yes, but...: Keep in mind the symptoms of constipation are by definition hard and painful to pass stools. Remember a little pushing and uncomfortableness is ok as long as the stools are soft. Also an every other day stool for some bottle fed babies is fine. Keep in mind the position babies are in as they stool, FLAT ON THEIR BACK. Can you imagine? One oz water and one oz apple juice once will help. ...Read more
Is it okay to switch from whole milk to soy milk? My son has been having constipation for a while now and iam very worried. Help
Avoid soy: Soy "milk" is highly processed and is not good to consume - by anybody. You didn't mention how old your son is. If he is an infant he needs a properly balanced substitute if you can't breast feed him. If older he may not even need milk. You may want to consider goat milk if cow dairy is giving him problems. Remember that children need fat for brain development. Stay away from low fat foods. ...Read more
