All of them: Carcinogens and nicotine are present in combusted tobacco, and non-smokers get plenty of it when in proximity to the source. This is not enough to cause addiction, but it can precipitate asthma attacks, sinus troubles, and high exposure in the long term (e.g. Flight attendants, wait staff and bar tenders) can lead to tobacco related lung disease (cancer and chronic bronchitis for example). ...Read more
What is it, the tobacco or the crop-sprayed chemicals, that cause the damage associated with cigarettes?
Probably both: The chemicals in tobacco, aside from nicotine, have been linked to many lung problems including cancer. It would not be unreasonable to think that the insecticides and herbicides that are sprayed on the tobacco plants- plus any other chemicals they add to the tobacco (flavorings,etc)- could be harmful. Im trying to quit smoking with patches is it the nicotine that constrics blood vessels or is it the other toxins in the smoke?
Nicotine constricts: While there might be a little cross-over, in general nicotine causes the vascular effects including constriction of blood vessels, & tars/other chemicals contribute carcinogens, promoting cancer. So in using the patch, you still get the effects of nicotine (hopefully at a lower dose than a cigarette) but are spared the hundreds of other chemicals. The literature does not suggest that marijuana can cause peripheral vascular disease, especially in moderation. One can avoid smoke altogether by eating marijuana brownies/cookies. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
