Please help docs! Is oxygen saturation the same things as oxygen uptake?

Please help docs! Is oxygen saturation the same things as oxygen uptake?

Not quite: Oxygen saturation reflects the proportion of red blood cell pigment - hemoglobin that is loaded ("saturated") with oxygen. It is unitless and shown as %. Oxygen uptake is the quantity of oxygen absobed/ consumed per unit time, usually in milliliters per min. ...Read more

Does sepsis usually cause oxygen saturation levels to fall?

Does sepsis usually cause oxygen saturation levels to fall?

It can: Sepsis can cause acute inflammation and swelling in the lungs making it harder to breathe, and causing oxygen levels to drop. Compromised heart and kidney function, as well as fluid resucitation can make matters worse. ...Read more

Will panic normally cause sudden drop in oxygen saturation levels? With sudden pulse of 144, oximeter went from 95% to 83%. Is that a normal reaction?

Will panic normally cause sudden drop in oxygen saturation levels? With sudden pulse of 144, oximeter went from 95% to 83%. Is that a normal reaction?

Not normal!: I don't know of "normal" reactions to panic. But something was not right to have those vital sign extremes. See a doctor to for an exam and report those stats. A feeling of panic can be a symptom itself, especially if there was no environmental or pre-cursor emotional horror to cause it. If your cardio system is ok, get a referral to a psychotherapist w/ excellent anxiety-panic tx skills. Best wis. ...Read more

How do I get my oxygen saturation level up?

Several factors: Several factors determine oxygen saturation. These include the amount of oxygen you breathe, the ability of the lungs to extract oxygen, the amount of red cells to carry oxygen, the ability of the heart and blood vessels to deliver oxygen to tissues, and efficiency of organ to use oxygen, any problems affecting these can cause low saruration. Treating a disease, exercise, supplemental o2 may help. ...Read more

Why can't I breath but my oxygen saturation level is good?

Why can't I breath but my oxygen saturation level is good?

Shortness of breath: ...Is caused by many abnormalities in the body, not simply low o2 levels. Some patients can have significant shortness of breath from copd, pneumonia, asthma and other illnesses without a low o2 level. If you continue to have trouble, you should see a doctor for evaluation to figure out why this is happening. ...Read more

Does bronchiolitis cause low oxygen saturation?

Does bronchiolitis cause low oxygen saturation?

It happends: Bronchiolitis causes a build up of secretions in the tiny airways and blocks transfer of oxygen into the tissues. It can and does cause a drop in blood oxygen in many cases. ...Read more

Can anxiety attacks cause oxygen saturation to drop?

Can anxiety attacks cause oxygen saturation to drop?

Potentially: If you have COPD or severe asthma and your ability to get enough air is already compromised, then yes, panic attacks can cause oxygen saturation to drop by hyperventilation and shallow breathing, but generally not meaningfully if otherwise in good health. ...Read more

What helps the body maintain a healthy oxygen saturation levels?

O2 goes into lung: Traverse the interstitial to the blood vessel wall to the blood cells goes to tissues and be delivered. Normal saturation therefore depends on the oxygen source, healthy alveoli with enough surface area, thin and healthy interstitial and blood vessel wall and normal and adequate blood cells and healthy consumption of o2. That is the balance. ...Read more

In a person who is elderly, what causes rises and falls in oxygen saturation?

In a person who is elderly, what causes rises and falls in oxygen saturation?

Many: If there is underlying lung disease (such as empysema) the lung is already prone difficulty extracting o2 out of the blood. As we age our lungs and chest get stiffer and there is more unusable space- with resulting low o2. Also, central or obesity related sleep apnea can contribute to low o2 levels. Pickwickian syndrome related to morbid obsesity can also decrease the amount of o2 levels. ...Read more

What common medical conditions are associated with low oxygen saturation levels?

Lung & Heart Disease: Hypoxia (low oxygen saturations) are usually caused by lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asbestosis, pulmonary fibrosis, etc). Many heart conditions (especially congenital defects in the new born) may result in low oxygen saturation levels. Beware of false lows with pulse oximetry readingson cold hands, peripheral vascular disease or really callussed finger tips. ...Read more

Does generAl anesthesia cause breathlessness after becoming concious? My oxygen saturAtion was ok but I felt breathless? Why?

Does generAl anesthesia cause breathlessness after becoming concious? My oxygen saturAtion was ok but I felt breathless? Why?

Muscle blockade....: With general anesthesia, neuromuscular blocking agents are often used to paralyze the muscles during the surgery. Sometimes it takes a little while for these to completely wear off. Your respiratory muscles can be affected so you are not taking real deep breaths. This can lead to the feeling of breathlessness. When the melds wear off, you feel normal again. That may be the reason for your symptoms ...Read more

My daughter has bronchiolitis and her oxygen saturation today fell to 92. After receiving several meds via nebulizer and her vein. Cause?

Mismatch: Between areas in the lungs where the oxygen can get through constricted airways and those parts of the lung tissue where the most of the blood is circulating creates the drop in percentage of oxygenated hemoglobin (saturation). 92% is worrying, but if it does not drop any further, is not life-threatening in a 15 months old, as long as there is prompt access to care and adequate monitoring ...Read more

SOB: Saturation when oxygen is above 60 torr can range from 90-100%. Pe can be large or small. Air hunger can be when there is real causes as in pneumonia, asthma, pe or even when a lung is constricted and can't inflate fully and lacks the feeling of satisfaction, anxiety, nervousness, CHF or even simple cold with congestion can do it.
