Trial and error,: There is no rhyme or reason to the sensitivity you are experiencing. Many patients allergic to sulfa will react to Selsun. Dove is fairly mild. Neutogena is mild and non-allergenic and many of my patients have done well with Zinc products. A trial of Zincon shampoo may be helpful. Persistence: Tinea versicolor takes time to clear & often recurs. Perhaps prescription strength selenium sulfide lotion (2.5%) applied for 10 minutes daily for 7 days will work better than otc selsun blue (due to higher concentration of active ingredient). They should do that daily for two weeks then the scale should be gone and they can expose their skin to sunlight ( 10 minutes only a day and no burning) which will repigment the skin.
