Does Prilosec Successfully Prevent Cancer Caused By Gerd
No: This medication is used to treat symptoms, but it does not prevent cancer development. If the symptoms are removed, but you don't treat the underlying cause if the problem, you may not prevent the disease from progressing. In general, however, Prilosec is an excellent medication for reflux symptoms. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

After eradicating Helicobactor (Hb), how much will stomach cancer likelihood (caused by Hb) be reduced?

Diagnosed with gerd , taking PPI that relieves symptoms but will this prevent damage to oesophagus and thus Barrett's. Thanks?
Does occasional heartburn/acid reflux cause esophageal cancer? Or is it more caused by chronic, long term severe acid reflux?
Cancer from reflux: Chronic GERD can increase the risk of esophageal cancer by producing changes in the lining of the esophagus from acid burns. This is called Barrett's esophagus and can increase the risk of esophageal cancer. This occurs in long term acid reflux. If you have only occasional symptoms, you are less at risk. If your symptoms are chronic, however, it's a good idea to get checked out. Good luck. ...Read more

Can 1mos use of Prevacid (lansoprazole) cause iron/b12 deficiency? Or is it more likely caused by atrophic gastritis for which PPI was prescribed?
Atrophic gastritis: Prevacid (lansoprazole) can cause b12 deficiency or pernicious anemia, but it's limited moreso to the elderly. Atrophic gastritis has a clearer association and can be a cause of pernicious anemia from low b12. Iron level measurements are often changed with anemia, but neither Prevacid (lansoprazole), nor atrophic gastritis seem to cause iron deficiency directly. ...Read more

Bad GERD even on 300mg ranitidine, prilosec stopped working. Is gerd caused by stomach polyps and gasteroperesis? H pylori 2011. Will get worse?
See GI doctor: Assuming that you are taking your medication correctly(Prilosec 30-60 mins before breakfast) and have followed the dietary precautions, one needs to consider bile reflux as a potential cause. Stomach polyps unless causing obstruction would not lead to GERD but gastroparesis may by slowing down stomach emptying. Sometimes surgery may be needed to correct the problem. ...Read more
Can esophogitis be prevented when there is progressive neuromuscular problem that causes esophageal dysphagia, esp. If ppis arent satisfactory?
Use antacids as reco: PPIs are the best medicine to reduce acid production(which is the cause of esophagitis). But there is an optimum maximum dose for each PPI which you should find out from your doctor and use the full dose so that there is complete shut down of acid production. That will minimize the esophageal inflammation(Esophagitis). ...Read more

Chronic gastritis/ulcers/irritation not caused by H. pylori can still lead to stomach cancer. What diagnosis tests would help check for cancer in this case?
Could chronic gastritis not caused by H.pylori still lead to metaplasia, causing REDUCED symptoms but actually INCREASED canc risk? How would we diagnose?
Gastric metaplasia: Gastric metaplasia can be caused by H. pylori but other risks for metaplasia include alcohol, bile reflux, etc. The risk of gastric adenocarcinoma with GASTRIC metaplasia is really quite small, and is different from metaplasia involving the esophagus (Barrett's mucosa), where the risk for dysplasia or cancer is more significant. metaplasia is diagnosed on tissue biopsy reviewed by a pathologist ...Read more
Is it true that taking a proton pump inhibitor for acid reflux can cause bad breath by allowing bacteria / fungi to accumulate in high pH environment?
Possible but unusual: Most likely lower esophageal adenocarcinoma is caused by gerd, which changes the lining of the lower esophagus into that of the stomach (barrett's) which is a precursor for adenocarcinoma. However, one could have squamous cell type without gerd. Best to review with your gastroenterologist. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
