I'm a 29 year old female & pretty healthy overall. Taking birth control for 5 years- what's the risk of deep vein thrombosis or serious blood clot?

Birth control: There certainly is a relationship between use of contraceptives, either orally or even in an IUD, and potential venous thrombosis. I would discuss this issue with her gynecologist as almost all of the birth control pills have been implicated in causing a venous thrombosis. Also with airplane travel that may increase the risk, and I would recommend use of a support stocking during airplane travel ...Read more

Using Oral Contraceptives (Definition)

Contraceptives are devices, drugs, or methods for preventing pregnancy, either by preventing the fertilization of the female egg by the male sperm or by preventing implantation of the fertilized egg. Choosing the appropriate contraceptive is a personal decision. Contraceptive options include: * Hormonal contraceptives (such as oral contraceptives, skin patch, vaginal ring, implant, and injection) * Intrauterine devices (IUDs), which contain either a hormone or copper * Barrier devices with or without spermicides (such as diaphragm, cervical cap, sponge, and condom) * Fertility awareness methods (such as temperature, cervical mucus, and calendar) * Female sterilization (tubal ligation, Essure) The condom is the only birth control method that provides protection against ...Read more

Can a tummy tuck cause deep vein thrombosis? I've been told that deep vein thrombosis can happen during or after a tummy tuck. Is this true, and if so, why? How is it prevented? .

Can a tummy tuck cause deep vein thrombosis? I've been told that deep vein thrombosis can happen during or after a tummy tuck. Is this true, and if so, why? How is it prevented?

.

Virchow's triad: The tummy tuck itself does not cause the clot but the stasis ( lack of movement) associated with being still under general anesthesia or in the post-operative period. To minimize this using foot pumps during surgery with compression stocking as well as encouraging movement after surgery is prescribed. Blood thinners may be used for high risk patients but not typically advised. ...Read more

Could deep vein thrombosis in the leg be caused by a bicycle gash on the leg?

Could deep vein thrombosis in the leg be caused by a bicycle gash on the leg?

Not very likely: If the gash was associated with tissue trauma like a crush injury with profound bruising and immobility, then a DVT could be possible, as dr. Press said. But if you only had a cut without much oterh deeper tissue damage, it is unlikely. ...Read more

Can a foreign object pressing against a vein cause a deep vein thrombosis?

Compression thrombos: Pressure resulting in obstruction of a large vein can cause thrombosis and phlebitis. Directly or indirectly through clot propagation, a deep vein may become involved. Reduction of normal blood flow(venous stasis) predisposes to thrombosis. Other factors (inheirited, birth control pills, smoking, malignancy, bedridden) encourage this process. ...Read more

Would deep vein thrombosis cause pain when straightening leg out?

Is possible: Typically, the pain of a DVT is there all of the time but is made worse with movement (straightening and bending). If you have leg pain and swelling, you should get it checked out. If you are worried about a dvt, you would be wise to get it checked out anyway--if for no other reason than peace of mind. ...Read more

What can cause a deep vein thrombosis?

What can cause a deep vein thrombosis?

Several things: Dvt occurs when virchow's triad is satisfied: hemodynamic abnormality (stasis, turbulence) endothelial damage, and hypercoagulability (abnormality in blood due to malignancy, increased risk in clot formation). Family history (thrombophilia), surgery, trauma, dehydration, prolonged bed rest, congestive heart failure, kidney problems are risk factors. ...Read more

If I have deep vein thrombosis in my legs, is this condition alone enough to cause death?

If I have deep vein thrombosis in my legs, is this condition alone enough to cause death?

Yes if it breaks off: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a clot that has formed in one of the deep veins, typically in the legs. By itself the majority of cases do not cause death when treated properly. The clot however may become bigger or break loose, traveling to the heart and lungs where it becomes a more serious condition with a higher risk of death. Treatment usually is a blood thinner medication and close follow-up. ...Read more
