See allergist: Unless you have been tested, you cannot rule out allergies. Yet burning eyes is not typical for allergic conjunctivitis and more suggestive of dry eyes or an irritant reaction to eye cosmetics (Mascara) and even infection. Vasomotor rhinitis is yet another possibility. Suggest that you consult an allergist. Read more

Does HIV flu cause sneezing, runny nose, and wet cough? With a mild fever and all gone in 4 days, except the cough a few more days and without rash. T

Unusual: We worry about acute HIV when someone has a flu-like syndrome that lingers, somewhat like mono would present. Fever, fatigue, mild nausea, light rash, sore throat, and/or swollen lymph nodes are all symptoms that can be seen with a number of viral syndromes including hiv. The HIV antibody test can take 3 or more months to turn positive, so to diagnose acute HIV we need to do a HIV RNA test. Read more

How come I occasionally get extreme sneezing and runny nose after running?

Allergy or no?: The most common reason for sneezing after a run is pollen allong the trail. Increased frequency and depth of breathing leads to heavy deposition of pollen on mucous membranes. But also wind, cold, sunlight, dust particles all stir up non-allergic or vasomotor rhinitis. Learn your cause by being tested by a competent allergist. Chicagoland has many. Check out aaaai. Depends...: If you are also having itchiness it is most likely allergies and you could take over the counter Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or Claritin (it should not make you drowsy like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can). If not, cold symptoms may last about 7-10 days, but if feeling very sick or worse during the next few days you need to see your doctor. For now lots of fluids, rest, cough and congestion meds should suffice. Read more

Viral infection: Drink over 2 liters of water / day--not hard, as one bottled water is ½ a liter. That will help to flush out the virus circulating in your bloodstream. A nasal spray decongestant like Afrin has minimal absorption into your bloodstream. A drying antihistamine (those which can make you sleepy) like diphenhydramine is regarded as safe, too. Try half the usual dose, which would be 25 mg. Read more
