Also scalp psoriasis is some thing to consider. You may want to see a dermatologist. ...Read more

More lather time: Many over-the-counter shampoos will help with a flaky scalp, including selsun blue, head and shoulders, t-sal/t-gel, and ketoconazole. Lather up the scalp and leave it on for at least 10 minutes. Count on the clock or listen to about 3 songs on the radio (sing along!). Do this every night for about 2 weeks then about 2-3 times a week. If that doesn't help, you may need a prescription steroid. ...Read more

The pediatrician is referring to a condition called seborrheic dermatitis. It presents as flaky scalp (appears like dandruff) and dry patches on the skin. The cause is unclear. Some doctors believe it is due to a rare yeast. Treatment includes shampoos selsun blue. I usuallly tell parents to use a very small amount 2-3 times per week until they see an improvement. Also, brush your baby's scalp with a soft brush to loosen the flakes. If the selsun blue does not work ask your doctor for an alternative treatment. To answer the last part of your question, no you don't have to let it sit on the skin or scalp, just wash in usual fashion; lotion is fine. If the spots look more red after use and it persists then discontinue and consult your doctor. If it returns to previous state then no need to worry.

Eczema vs food allergy: Itchy food reactions in the skin (scalp here) can be due to T cell immune responses, and not all of those involve production of antibodies. Atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis are plenty itchy and may produce positive patch tests for delayed hypersensitivity when immediate hypersensitivity tests are negative (no IgE). If you itch less by avoiding those foods, that's the action to take. ...Read more
