Could the use of a strong fabric softener cause an isolated incident of bacterial vaginosis? I have only been with 2 sexual partners my entire life.

Could the use of a strong fabric softener cause an isolated incident of bacterial vaginosis? I have only been with 2 sexual partners my entire life.

No: Bacterial vaginosis is a mild infection of the vagina caused by bacteria being out of balance. Normally, there are a lot of good bacteria and some bad bacteria in the vagina. The good types help prevent the overgrowth of the bad types. With bacterial vaginosis, there are not enough good bacteria and too many bad bacteria. Women do not need to have sex to have bacterial vaginosis. ...Read more

Maybe nothing...: There is a debate among STD experts whether BV is an STD. It is closely related to sex. Cases like yours support the STD theory, but it's not known if some (most? All?) cases are due to catching a particular germ that causes it. Treating the male partners usually doesn't help. See GUM specialist, check for other STDs, re-treat (metronidazole), and use condoms consistently for the next few weeks. ...Read more

How can a person get bacterial vaginosis by being with the only sexual partner ever? Considering she doesn't douche either.

How can a person get bacterial vaginosis by being with the only sexual partner ever? Considering she doesn't douche either.

Bacterial vaginosis: Bacterial vaginosis is the most common vaginal infection. It is an overgrowth of normal vaginal bacteria, not a sexually transmitted infection. When it mixes with blood or semen the ph gets elevated releasing the fishy odor. It is easily fixed with antibiotics. She wil need to be tested for other infections but this is the most likely. ...Read more

Can bacterial vaginosis be caused by a method other than sex? My friend got it at a time when she was not sexually active. She's had 2 partners ever.

Not by sex: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is not caused by sex, although it is more common in women who are active. BV is not really an infection, but an imbalance in the normal bacteria in the vagina. The healthy bacteria aren't doing well, so bad bacteria overgrows, causing the symptoms. Antibiotics suppress the bad bacteria, but it's important to do probiotics, like acidophilus (in yogurt) to restore the good. ...Read more

Had a bacterial infection. Now I have pimples near my clitoris. Any correlation? No new sexual partners as well.

Herpes? Yeast?: "Pimples" in the genital area often is herpes; or maybe a yeast infection? Many monogamous people get herpes, either because of recurrence of a longstanding infection that previously was asymptomatic; or because of new transmission even though both partners are faithful. See a doctor ASAP; diagnosis is most accurate before lesions start to heal. Good luck! ...Read more

Why is bacterial vaginosis more common in women who are sexually active? My only 2 partners never ejaculated in me and my last partner was months ago.

Why is bacterial vaginosis more common in women who are sexually active? My only 2 partners never ejaculated in me and my last partner was months ago.

Unknown, complicated: BV is overgrowth of mostly normal vaginal bacteria and undergrowth of others. Why it happens isn't clear. BV often behaves like an STD: rare in virgins, more frequent with new or multiple partners. Maybe associated w/ cunnilingus (oral bacteria?). Definitely an STD in lesbians via vaginal fluid; affected women's female partners almost always get it. Once present, recurrence is common w/o new sex. ...Read more

Emergency contracept: Yes there are several products available to be taken within 48 hours of possible pregnancy to attempt to prevent this. Plan b, preven, or ulipristol (which can be effective up to 5 days after intercourse). Emergen is actually a vitamin supplement which is not likely to prevent pregnancy. Good luck. ...Read more

I was told I had bacterial vaginosis, is that considered a sexually transmitted disease?

I was told I had bacterial vaginosis, is that considered a sexually transmitted disease?

Usually not: BV is a complex and poorly understood. It's overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina--mostly normal bacteria, just increased amounts. Exact causes are uncertain. BV often behaves like an STD, eg more common after new sex partners and in women with other STDs, and can be passed sexually in lesbian women. But heterosexual transmission is uncertain, and treating male partners doesn't prevent recurrence. ...Read more

White fishy smelling stuff in the lips of my vagina, been to the doctor and told its not bacterial vaginosis or yeast. Not sexually active. Help!

Hmmm: Not sure what to tell you, but usually a fishy smell is due to some type of bacterial imbalance. These don't always show up on a routine culture, and you may be an atypical case. I would try two things: 1) "luvena" is a vaginal lubricant to help balance the ph and encourage the growth of healthy bacteria, and 2) vaginal probiotics like "femdophilus" need to be inserted into the vagina to work. ...Read more
