Claritin D sleep works great to clear nighttime nasal congestion but now I'm awake and jittery due as side effect. Other options? (mucinex (guaifenesin) D)?

Don't use "D": The "D" in many medications is causing your side effects of being awake and jittery. Please only use oral antihistamines without the "D" to help with nasal congestion - zyrtec, allegra, claritin. You can also try OTC nasal steroid sprays. Read more

Do medicine that's suppose to be for nasal congestion and runny nose really work?

Yes, usually: Nasal congestion and runny nose can be a symptom of many disorders. If the underlying problem is allergies, nasal steroid sprays are very effective and antihistamines help. If symptoms are from a cold, it will just take time. If symptoms are from sinus infection, then antibiotics will be useful. If symptoms are related to pregnancy, they will resolve when the baby is born. Read more

Decongestants: Depending the type you are taking and your medical history decongestants can be taken safely. They can be taken everyday as long as you follow the recommended dosages and frequencies. If you have hypertension or cardiovascular disease, you should not take decongestants oral ones. Topical sprays should only be used for colds or sinus infections for 2-4 days then stopped. Read more

What causes chronic nasal congestion which responds to afrin but not astelin, flonase, or sinus rinses? Can surgery even work in a case like this?

What causes chronic nasal congestion which responds to afrin but not astelin, flonase, or sinus rinses? Can surgery even work in a case like this?

Afrin (oxymetazoline) rebound: Afrin (oxymetazoline) causes severe narrowing of the blood vessels in the nose and thus the effect on decongestion. However prolonged constriction leads to decrease blood supply to the tissue and may lead to permanent damages. The nose also becomes less responsive to afrin (oxymetazoline) with prolonged use. Flonase counteracts inflammation and Astelin is an antihistamine and neither constricts the blood vessels. Read more

Nasonex, (mometasone) nasacort aq or flonase, which quicker for nasal congestion/ seasonal allergies? I also nasal colloidal silve-nott o2 binding, will that work

Nasal sprays: All nasal steroids take a few days to start working and need to build up a dose before they become fully effective. Nasal antihistamines are quicker in onset of actiion. A combination nasal spray should help your symptoms for fast and long lasting relief. Now I don't know anything about the coooloidal silver spray you mentioned. Read more
