Does Mucinex Really Work
What are the possible side effects of Mucinex (guaifenesin) for congestion and how well does it work?
Is there anything besides Mucinex (guaifenesin) on the market that works as an expectorant? I have asthma - mucus is major issue for me. I take Mucinex (guaifenesin) twice a day
Oral Diphyl-G: Thick mucus has been a real problem for my patients with asthma. Mucus thinning medications such as Guaifenesin present in Mucinex (guaifenesin) and robutussin has been very beneficial. One other item which I prescribe to patients is a mixture of Dyphylline and Guaifenesin (difil-g) which I find very useful to bring the secretion up because of additional dilating effect on airway. Please consult your doctor. ...Read more
I have asthma and my chest feels very congested but I caint cough nothing up but my asthma is worse because of this would taking mucinex (guaifenesin) dm work?
Mucinex (guaifenesin) DM is: Unlikely to help much. Are you using your prescribed inhalers? If not, you should start them. If you are and are still having difficulty, you should see your doctor so they can listen to your chest and also examine you for any other infection...so you can get the proper diagnoses and treatment. ...Read more

Ear congestion rx: Mucinex (guaifenesin) is not as effective as other meds. This action helps eustacian tube drainage. Be patient. ...Read more
Does codeine expire? My 4 year old son has been dealing with a scratchy throat all day and the Mucinex (guaifenesin) did not work today. We have some codeine that my older son used two years ago. Is it okay to administer a small dosage to our 4 year old?
You should not give your 4 year old son Codeine for two reasons:
- first of all, Codeine does have an expiration date. It the medication was given to you two years ago, then it is almost certainly expired. Almost all medications have an expiration date. You should go through your medicine cabinet every three months and discard any old, unused portions of prescription medications.
- second, it is never safe to share prescription medications unless specifically instructed to do so by your doctor. Codeine can be a good pain killer, but can be very dangerous in the wrong doses. Too large of a dose can cause someone to stop breathing. That why many medications are regulated via the prescription system - for safety - and should not be used unless specifically instructed to do so by your doctor.
The best (and safest) treatments for a sore throat are: lots of fluids, rest, hot tea with honey and lemon, chicken noodle soup, Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen for pain, and a spoonful of honey for a sore throat. Research shows that these home remedies are as effective and much safer than over the counter medications. If you are concerned about your son's illness, you should call his doctor to discuss the safest and most appropriate treatments. ...Read more
Claritin D sleep works great to clear nighttime nasal congestion but now I'm awake and jittery due as side effect. Other options? (mucinex (guaifenesin) D)?
What works better for running nose, allergies? Allegra, Claritin, Zytrec, or Mucinex (guaifenesin)? Debating on which one to get. Fast and 24 hr relief is what am looking for.
Allergy: True allergy should be treated with an antiallergy medication such as loratadine, fexofenadine or cetirizine. They are generally considered equivalent and you should use the one that works best for you. Mucinex (guaifenesin) is an expectorant and should not do much for allergy. ...Read more
How does prednisone work to help with a cough? Congested nose, ears, chest. Mucinex (guaifenesin) caused me palpitations and got prescribed steroids instead
Anti-inflammatory: Steroids are an anti-inflammatory medication typically prescribed in active asthma. They would be prescribed if pt is wheezing or having difficulty breathing or having coughing fits that are attributed to airway inflammation. So this medication would decrease the inflammatory markers present in the airway that are causing leaking of the vessels and swelling of the airway. ...Read more

No, and why are you: Asking? If you are trying to OD, you need to contact your doctor immediately, call a suicide hotline and get help. Mucinex (guaifenesin) itself is just guanifenisin, which doesn't really have any toxicity even in high doses. However, there are versions of the medication that have antihistamines, decongestants and dextromethorphan, and all of these in higher doses can cause problems, although rarely serious. ...Read more
